misfire detection kit

Question for the scholars on here, does the S1 Exige has this misfire detection kit as installed on the VVC?

I’ve never heard of one on a VHPD. I think it was a recall/afterthought on the VVC-engined cars only?

The Exige ECU will detect misfires on each cylinder on its own though, and show fault codes

Cheers Deggles,

I’m just trying to resolve a running rich issue and saw someone with similar experience but with an Elise found the cause was the MDK.

From what I’ve read the MDK was installed on the Exige as part of a recall to manage a potential rev limit issue cutting in at 5500rpm which was happening on some Exiges. Seems this was partly due to HT leads popping off the coil and developing air pockets. Now mine does do this occasionally and I reseat the HT leads the problem goes away.

I’ll perhaps post this on the VHPD driveability thread as it’s all part of that conversation really.

Cheers!

Mine does not have a MDK, that does not mean others don’t. My car used to run ok cold and was a monster when warm and ran very rich, stinking of petrol. It was the lambda probe. The ECU did not give any fault codes, just over fuelled.

I’m curious what the MDK consists of on the Exige, is it a separate black box that is wired to the ECU?

Exige/340R MDK was a dealer download into the ECU, rather than an external box of stuff on the S1 VVC cars. Exige/340R ECU was much cleverer than the S1 VVC ECU.

Or Lotus had more access to what it could do. Bear in mind it was the same ECU as the Lotus V8 engine, so had lots of inputs to spare. Lotus had all the info from EFI, rather than what was allowed from they’re Rover partnership

Thanks chaps.

Dunno if it helps, but my misfiring was caused by a dodgy ignition coil (which is a Vauxhall Frontera part) easy to replace and cheap
