Mirror fell off...refitting advice

Yesterday the mirror fell off the windscreen…

I bought a Loctite kit from local Halfords, used it exactly as the instructions advised and it was dire:

The kit has a tube of adhesive that has to be spread over the cleaned surface of the mount; then it instructs to place the sheet of activated gauze over that, pressing it into the adhesive and apply immediately to the inside of the screen.

Despite doing that I found the glue had reacted & set in the seconds between applying the gauze and getting the mount to the screen. Halfords were fine about it and swapped without question, so I tried again, this time with ‘my own’ procedure:

  1. Cut a strip of gauze the correct width, but longer than needed;
  2. Tape the gauze to the screen in the correct position, making sure you leave a sufficient gauze area for the mount;
  3. Spread the adhesive on the mount;
  4. Press mount onto the pre-located gauze & hold for 30 sec.

Works a treat - solid fix, no air bubbles and once the tape’s been removed the excess gauze can be carefully trimmed away using a scalpel.

Result is a neat, tidy job, so I thought I’d just share the instructions (and the joy!) on here :slight_smile:

Alternatively take it to a windscreen fitter (as I did) and they did it for a fiver(cash job, wink wink). Sorted.

Hmmm…I had all the fun and saved 51p as well, lol!

I just left mine off - it’s still on the workbench in the garage after 3 years!

Same here.
Instead of fixing old one I’ve bought one of these:
