Doing this plus the FI Monaco Historic next month - I recall that someone here, AndyD? attended this recently - any advice where to go/watch/visit would be much appreciated
Simon
Its been a few years since I went to MM … I believe things have changed a bit …
The 2012 route is here
http://www.1000miglia.eu/inglese/home.html?http://www.1000miglia.eu/inglese/partecipare/informazioni/disposizioni_generali.html
We used to stay in Brescia and go into the city in the morning to watch the cars getting checked over … good chance to get up close to them, then drive the course and find somewhere to watch that evening as they make their way to Ravenna for evening stop.
Then we would drive over to San Marino as you get a great close up of them driving up to the town and through it. Then across to Firenze to stay the next evening and drive the course to the Futa Pass … where you need to get there early as its packed but is a classic place to watch on the last day.
Then autoroute back to Brescia for the finish.
Another way is just drive the route and find good watching places … less crowded and have a picnic or find a street cafe to sit and watch from.
Have fun
Many thanks Andy
Really looking forward to this - been on the to do list for too many years!!
Caught up with MM whilst in Rome with Lorraine last year Simon, amazing sight, awesome cars, but will be fantastic to witness on the open road - Enjoy
There’s an entry for this in Richard Meaden’s book Classic Motorsport Routes - ticked off a few in there but not this one. Definitely on the bucket list, hope you enjoy, take loads of photos and tell us about it later.
I’m sure that SimonE thinks he’s going to meet Milly Melia
I have some friends going in their Morgans & a Vauxhall 30/98 down to watch , this part of the itinerary…
Day 7- Thursday, May 17th, Lake Garda - Brescia (start of the 2012 Mille Miglia) - Lake Garda, Italy (no driving today)
Today is the start of the 2012 Mille Miglia so you travel by the train in the morning to nearby Brescia taking the 9.30am train from Desenzano, a journey of 15 minutes. The atmosphere is amazing and we spend the day absorbing the ambiance in this historic city with its rich artistic heritage including Roman temples and triumphalist architecture. In the afternoon we can visit the Mille Miglia Museum which is based in the Sant’ Eufemia monastery in Brescia. Late afternoon we return to our hotel for an early dinner. Tonight the 2012 Mille Miglia cars come through Desenzano, the first checkpoint on the 1,000 mile route, so we can watch over 350 Mille Miglia cars drive through the centre of the town from 8.00pm to 11.00pm a sight for sore eyes indeed. Prior to the arrival of the Mille Miglia cars there will also be a parade of 150 Ferraris just to whet our appetites.
Day 8- Friday, May 18th, Choice, either to visit Venice for the day by train OR to drive to the Ferrari museum (Galleria Ferrari) in Maranello and the Lamborghini museum in Sant Agata Bolognese (235 miles)
Option A. Venice by train
In the morning you catch the train at approximately 9.00am from Desenzano to Venice where you can spend all day exploring this fascinating, unique town.In the evening return back to Desenzano and our hotels. This evening you are free to make your own dinner arrangements.
Option B Ferrari and Lamborghini museums by car, (235 miles return).
You take the motorway and drive approximately a hundred miles south east down to Modena then drive 10 miles to Maranello just south of Modena and visit the Ferrari Museum, (Galleria Ferrari) which is just around the corner from the Ferrari factory. There is also time to visit the various Ferrari shops as well as taking a peak over the wall at the Ferrari test track the famous "Pista di Fiorano. In the afternoon you drive 15 miles east to Sant’ Agata Bolognese near Bologna to visit the Lamborghini museum with a possible opportunity to visit the factory too. You then have an option to visit the brand new museum in Modena devoted to the life of Enzo Ferrari, ( the museum opened on 10.3.12), then return back to Desenzano and our hotel. This evening you are free to make your own dinner arrangements.
Day 9- Saturday, May 19th,Tour of Lake Garda ( 85 miles)
In the evening Desenzano-Manerbio–Desenzano to watch the end of the Mille Miglia ( 60 miles)
A leisurely drive around Lake Garda in a clockwise direction enjoying dramatic scenery further north ending in impressive rocky cliffs, sometimes swathed in pines which hug the shoreline of the northern tip. Our morning coffee stop is at Gardone Riviera just north of Salo where you can visit the fascinating Il Vittoriale Villa and beautiful botanical gardens. The route then takes you clockwise up the western shore of Lake Garda to Gargagno after which you turn left onto a narrow winding road which leads to Tignale and then across the plateau and down the valley to Tremosine where you drive back to the main road again. Along this 20 mile deviation there are incomparable views of the lake. Continuing north along the western lake shore you can stop to admire Limone Sul Garda before arriving at Riva del Garda our lunchstop at the top of the lake and Lake Garda’s most famous holiday resort. In the afternoon you drive down the east shoreline of Lake Garda to our first coffee stop Malcesine which, after Sirmione, is arguably the prettiest village on the lake. After this you continue back around the lake to Sirmione on the southern shore our second afternoon coffee stop. Sirmione, a charming and atmospheric medieval town on a peninsula at the south of the lake less than 10 miles east from Desenzano, is often described as "the jewel in Lake Garda’s crown. The town can only be accessed on foot by crossing the moat of a 16th-century castle at the town’s entrance. After Sirmione you return to our hotel for an early dinner. After dinner we drive to Manerbio to watch the Mille Miglia cars arrive at the last rally checkpoint prior to arriving in Brescia. For the aficianados there is an option to follow the Mille Miglia cars into Brescia to see the cars cross the finishing line in the evening after their 1,000 mile route. You then return to our hotel.
