MESC Brands 1st May

Just got home after an excellent day. I managed to fix my fuel / injector issue from Donnington o Sunday morning (dodgy crimp connector behind the dash) before driving down to a mates house close to Brands.

Got to the circuit early and unloaded the car. The rain was hammering down so we put the wets on and had a twiddle with the dampers and the roll bar and stuff, in the hope of getting some kind of wet setup. I had never driven on the wets before in anger, so that didnt do my nerves much good. Lol

Then it was a whiz out to the paddock to sign on, then a whiz back to the pit garage with my paper work so the scrutenier could sign it off. The car passed with no questions asked (WOO HOO!!!). Then I had to run down to the media centre for the rookie briefing. I was bloody knackered before I had even got in the car.

By this time the rain had stopped and the sun was out and the track was drying fast, but all of our group went to the holding area on wet tyres. The nerves were jangling a bit as we all filed down the pit lane, but once on track I let everyone go to try and make a bit of space for myself. By this time the track was 90% dry and wets were the totally wrong tyres to be on. However I thought as I would have to reconnect the roll bar and twiddle with the dampers as well as change the tyres I would just stay out and just try and get used to the track. The tyres held up for about 4 laps then they just over heated and it was like driving with a soggy marsh mellow at each corner of the car. All of that resulted in 7th on the grid.

Back in the pits we put the car back onto dry settings and gave it a bit of a check over and all seemed well.

The nerves mounted in the afternoon as our race got closer, and I dont mind admitting I was really nervous. On the grid I had Dave Harvey in front to the right, Russ in front to the left and a bloody great Ultima to the side of me. I had got some good advice on the start and I held the car on the brakes (the start in on a down hill slope) with the outside of my foot holding the revs at about 4k, then when the redlight went out I slipped my foot off the brake, floored the throttle and dumped the clutch and the thing just went, I went through the middle of Russ and Dave Harvey, Russ went to the left and round the noble n front of him, I tried to go to the right of the noble and had the door firmly closed. The first part of the race had me battling with Russ, that was great and in the end I managed to eek past at the hairpin. All credit for Russ driving a car he had never sat in before that morning!!!

The rest of the race I was slowly reeling in the noble, but it doesnt matter how hard you try and how many zillion revs you give it, 190BHP is no match for 400+ and even though I seemed to be better on the brakes and quicker through some of the bends, he would just blow me away down the straights. Then the cabin started to fill with oil smoke, I looked in the mirrors and smoke was billowing out of the back of the car, I made a b line for the nearest marshals post and jumped out of the car. There was oil everywhere, I guess my trusty old standard VHPD, just couldnt handle the constant 8,300rpm onslaught and had called it a day.

We got the car back to the pits and there were no obvious signs of what had let go, the pugs were all fine, there were no holes in anything and it didnt look like any hoses had let go. We didnt bother having a good look and just loaded it back on the trailer. We think something like the crank shaft oil seal may have failed or something like that. Fingers crossed it isnt terminal and it will be all back in one piece for Snetterton as I dont think my new engine will be ready for then.

MASSIVE Thank Yous to the following!

Firstly Russ. You were a legend mate, he kind of took me under his wing today and gave me a hundred little pointers about what to do where and what happens next and stuff. Thanks mate, that meant loads to me and I really appreciate it!!!

Randy and Graham for all there help and pointers

The Edwards boys and Peksy for all of there encouragement throughout the day.

Graham and the Plans boys!!

Big thanks for my three trusty mechanics Wayne, Pete and Tony who really took the stress out of the day by making sure the car was where it needed to be and with everything done that needed to be done.

Lastly a big thanks to everyone else who came up and wished me well and commented on the car and stuff!!!

I was a little buzzed when I got back to the pits after the race, it felt like I was on drugs or something. I couldnt stay still or stop shouting and stuff, so sorry if I annoyed anyone. I didnt mean to be stupid. Lol.

Here is looking forward to the next one!!!

Sorry to hear that Sean, so the pressure is really on Mr Erland now then.

Bernard

Excellent writeup and I’m glad everybody was so helpful.

Hope you can find the problem and have better luck next time.

Adrenalin overdose sign?

I wish I was having fun like you! (maybe someday)

Fantastic report Sean!

Hope it’s nothing serious with the engine.

Fantastic pictures there Mark, you just seemed to be in all the right places at the right times. Graham was so close to that silver Aston when he spun out in front of him and he did a damn fine job of avoiding it. Just a shame you didnt get any of the gigantic tail end slapper he got going when he managed to get it back onto the tarmac.

Not my pictures, they were taken by Paul Golding from the L-o-T Hospitality box.
From there we saw the start of the huge tank-slapper as he returned onto the track from the grass but it was behind the control tower so we all had to wait until he re-appeared going into Surtees.

Mark

Just to re-iterate that those pics are brilliant - please thank Paul, from all of us here.

Hello Guys

I have been reading part of your forum over the last couple of months, following George’s advice that it is the friendliest forum he knows of.

Unfortunately I do not have an Exige, but an Elise, that I track as much as I can .

I had the pleasure to be at Brands Hatch for the first MESC race.

All I can say is that I was amazed by the friendliness of everyone and the good atmosphere that was in the pits.
All the cars looked well prepared, but as a Lotus fan, I hoped that the Lotuses would perform as good as possible.

I must say that my expectations were surpassed.
A K-Series S2 won, beating both Nobles in the prosess.
Sean’s excellent driving brought him in the 4th place in his underpowered Elise, which was clearly faster in the corners but could not do much on the straights against the Noble that took the 3rd place.
Unfortunately, his tired VHPD broke half way down the last lap IIRC
The 4th place was taken in the end, by the equally impressive Russ, who despite driving a “loaned” car, that he had never driven before, was lapping very fast.

Congratulations guys and all the best for the rest of the series.
I will be following, together with George, all the races, so I will see you at the next one.

On a slightly different note, I was watching the race from the Lotus-on_track box, where I was able to film most of the race.

Here is the Video I recorded, unedited. (159mb, 12 mins)

Regards
Nikos

P.S. Nice to meet Ian and his little lad, Bailey.
Bailey is very bright and he seemed to love cars and ice cream
Ian, I read that you wont take him in the Exige because it is loud.
You are more than welcome to take him out for a ride in my relatively quiet Elise next time.

Nice one Nicos

I dont get on here regularly, but I’ve just read this and what a great story.

Well done Sean and all involved.

Of course I’m just a little bit pleased that Dean won the race in the Plans Motorsport Elise.

I just wanted to post that there are some truly excellent photos up on:

Well done to Jason and Ben at Tsuphotographic

I just wanted to post that there [color:“red”] is a [/color] truly excellent photo up on:

Sorry Graham, couldn’t resist

Thanks to that video (and broadband) I could see what you guys lived up to there.
Made me feel all tingly inside.

Excellent job on Plan’s Elise and Sean! (until the oil hose broke). Quick to park it as well!

Welcome Nick.
Thats a nice video. Thank you.

The race was absolutely brilliant with many overtakes. It really kept our interest high until the last second.
Congratulations to all racers and especially to our Sean and Russ.
Fantastic drive from both of you. I cant wait to see you again racing with your improved engine and car, respectively.

Finally, congratulations to PlansMotorsport team and Dean who won the race. This car is absolutely stunning in all respects, but of course it wouldnt be there if Dean wasnt such an excellent driver.

Thank you Nico, I’m touched.

He’s been out in the Exige a few times when he was younger, and seemed to think it was cool. Once he’s in he’s fine, just doesn’t like getting near it in case it starts. I’m not sure he’d trust an Elise to be much quieter, but if the chance ever comes and he’s interested up that’d be great.

Thank you for being so welcoming of him in the LoT box, he enjoyed things much more up there, and seemed as glued as his dad was to the MESC race.

I think what George has discovered is the truth. Exiges.com is a great part of the ownership experience, and a special part of the Internet.

Ian

Ian

It was my pleasure.

See you at the next race or if you guys do a meet.

Nikos
P.S. Bring Bailey along, and I will make sure we have plenty of ice cream

Thanks for that Nick, it shows what a great spectator circuit Brands Indy is.

Could I just say a belated thanks to the usual crowd including The Edwardz, Dad, 83man & boy and especially Team Scandall without whom we would not have been there. Very reasonable rates too!

Well done to Sean for some cracking driving, hope I can give you a better challenge next time.

Nikos

Really excellent video… especially for us way up northerners who would have like d to have been there

Sean must be please that his first race has been captured - what an excellent drive superb

Hi Nikos

Thanks again for the video. I am sorry to have missed the race, but I was running low on points at home. I really want to take my own son to one of the races.

To me the forums have become a really pleasant part of lotus ownership - not just for technical advice, but also because of the many really great people I have met over the past couple of years - nikos for one.

Well done to the lotus representatives at the MESC race - Sean - that car is going to be something special when it gets the power it deserves. Graham and team - top job. It was nice to see the car in the flesh at plans the week before. Russ - good driving in the yellow peril.

Cheers
Andrew
