Inspired by the inertia-free approach to chopping cars demonstrated by Chris/Phil on the S1 market commentary thread :
Imagine you’ve just been given the green-light from your respective domestic authority and have the ££/space to make a fleet change/addition in 2017, what would you do?
For me I’d want to chop the diesel bus in favour of securing a totally OTT huge-displacement, Luxo wagon for family duties and a runaround for the Missus. I really want one of those 6.2 E63 wagons with all the toys. Alas not got the space and can’t justify the £££ even if my authorities would likely green light it. All other boxes are ticked in a way I’m really happy with.
I still want to get either a Lamborghini huracan, Ferrari 458 or a mclaren but I can’t see that happening for a couple of years yet. Could get the Audi R8, the new one is pretty much a huracan but with an Audi badge and can be had for £100k. There’s so many cars I want to have it’s no wonder I swap them so often
We need a new family ( when it chooses them to be around) / dog wagon. Gillys diesel golf is coming to the end of its useful life , well more accurately we’ve become bored of it, as being a diesel golf it will only ever be outlived by a Toyota hilux.
The golf R estate seems to tick the boxes and would be within budget. I’ ve had such great service from Cayennes over the years that I hanker for the pork side again. The macan is top of the wish list but probably a bit too much to spend. Also, I have a problem with pork. When I had the V8 cayenne, I needed the turbo. When I had the turbo I needed to be followed around by a refuelling lorry . 9 mpg around town wasn’t great.
Also plan to look at Audi SQ thingy and Seat Al… (Memorable name). 4 WD desirable for skiing and must be able to tow a Lotus.
Most importantly, the whole thing is being driven by SWMBO , so green lights all the way. Looking forward to getting back from Antigua and going shopping.
Potential house purchase may throw a spanner in the works but for me in 2017…
Plan A is to sell the 4C (warranty running out) and Golf (shed) and get an M2 or 981 Cayman GTS which I can use as a daily driver but still have fun in.
(That’s on the basis I get the S1 back to rude health and continue using it for track days.)
Plan B is to garage the S1, buy a nearly-new Elise Cup for a track toy, and daily drive something else (cheap Golf R lease deals are massively tempting)
The Mrs wants a new car this year, she wanted another evoque or an f pace then she has seen the Porsche 4x4 (macan I think?) and wants that. Unlike me she will keep her car for a couple of years before we change it. I tried to convince her to get an M4 but she’s not game.
Picking up a GLC Coupe 250d AMG next Saturday (a surprise), one of the first in the country I think. The engine is bang on for my wife and to my eyes a particularly good looking motor. Ticked a couple of bling boxes and the premium pack but the basic package is mightly impressive. More or less the same basic price as a Macan, which when spec’d with similar kit through a spanner in the works somewhat. Like my VW Toerag, it does what I need it to do right now but would love a Lexus LC, that’s one sexy fricking V8 right there. S1 project car, tick. R300 track car, tick
I tried an F-pace to universal family dislike. I want an Aston but the dog will not sit on the roof rack, Audi are top of my hate list after what they have done to my car and their lack of customer care. Went to the Volvo shop and my wife could not even venture into the showroom and my son refused a sit in test.
So, it’s a Fiat Panda. I quite like the Golf R estate but VAG need to earn forgiveness before I give them any money.
The only adjustment to my fleet in 2017 is likely to be the sale of my E39 M5. I adore the old thing but I’ve literally only done a few hundred miles in it in the last 12 months. I don’t commute to work in it as I’ve inherited my wife’s old golf and at the moment with a busy little 17 month old daughter I don’t get time to just go out for the hell of it for a blast. It’s about £9k’s worth of car going to waste unfortunately…money that can be invested and put towards something else in the future
My mother bought a 280SL new in 86 (paid a premium as they were no cars available) and it was the worst car she ever owned! They rust horrendously, leak (boot and roof) and drive with the steering feel of a boat! She once turned into her works car park and the car went straight on with the major steering failure being the final straw! Even the 280 was thirsty, so god knows what the bigger engines are like. Don’t do it, it will be a huge money pit.
Have a rather attractive lump sum due in a couple of months - I am of that age - was thinking Astonish - but V8 or V12 that is the question? - S/H of course. I want a luxury barge
Also seriously considering selling the Exige as it is getting used less and less…
