M3 Incident at Bedford!

Ouch!

BMW M3 Crash at Bedford Autodrome May 2014 - YouTube

The guy in the white car just about to go out on track was lucky! Another few seconds ahead of himself and he would had the Beemer in the side of him. I bet he was thinking WTF as it came across his path upside down just in front of him, not something he is going to forget…

I bet he never indicated his intentions either :lolno:

Lots of people come off on that corner. Its quite fast but there’s loads of hard run-off on the exit but people seem to go in too hot and then not want to cross the painted kerb (that has 5m wide of tarmac the other side of it) and either tighten their line, lift-off or both…and spin. I saw a Noble go off there and then a VX do the same and make contact with the parked Noble.

I was on a trackday there with my mate Tap in his DC2. He was going on and on about not understanding how people can spin at that corner and then,…yup you guessed it he went out in the next session and totally binned it there

That’s pretty shocking. I’ve done a full 360 there in a Boxter but kept it on the tarmac. Starts of in a nice drift and before you know it you’re looking over your shoulder. Managed to keep it running but then stalled trying to pull away much to the amusement of the pit wall. Ben you’re absolutely right about the run off on the outside. If needed have always used the extra space since.

I’ve seen a few cars go off there as well, though they hit the barrier much sooner where this guys looks to have taken a longer line and tripped up when the gravel steps up onto the road

like you say benja people seem to bottle it mid corner and initiate a slide. It’s also possible to break traction on the paint which is car width at both the apex and exit. If you’re hitting the apex hard in the wet it’ll let go or if you overshoot and you’re still cornering hard and leaning on the outside tyres when you get to the exit paint it could spin there as well. I reckon this guy lifted off then gripped the wheel as hard as he could until it rolled,

Yup indeed, using the painted bits is defo for the dry only as they are like ice in the wet.

I actually think this guy was showboating gone wrong, I just watched it again and you can hear he’s on the power as the car is sliding…

Yeah deffo sounds like he keeps his foot in. Some credit due there then.

in his head:

“I’m a 'effing drift KIINNNGGGGG, oh wait… tits”

seriously, hope all is well (and insured) and back on track sooner rather than later.

I first did Bedford on a Palmer day and the instructor pushes you wide over than kerb and on to concrete area (by grabbing the wheel) if the potential for that occurs. Their main worry is spearing into the pit wall.

Although in my case the instructor was a pussy and I didn’t really appreciate having the wheeled grabbed when I wasn’t near the limit…so went in harder next time round, he curled in to a ball as he thought death was imminent, I "Whoop, whoop!"ed my way through a beautiful neutral slide in an Integra R and he then promised not to interrupt again.

If you’ve got a trick diff you can slide it nicely through that bend (which I can see is tempting in front of all in the pits) but otherwise its about the only real place to trip you up nastily at Bedford.
