LSD for drifting

I am planing on going to a drift day at Oulton at the end of the month. Now last year I used my BMW and it was perfect but I dont have it anymore and I am going to use my S2 lotus. It has the honda conversion but doesnt have an LSD. Can someone clear this up for me, is an LSD deemed as required for drifting or does it just make it easier to start, maintain or exit a drift ? Lastly, does an LSD help the lotus on track with the honda ? If yes, how much are you looking at for an install.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

I’ll get me popcorn out whilst JFK goes off on one!

Have I opened a can of worms or something ? I guess there isnt a straight forward easy answer then

Well if you want to do any form of drifting in my opinion you will need a LSD and shocking tyres on the back. With the LSD the slide will be more controlable only downside is that running an LSD will apparently induce understeer under certain conditions.

Lots of debate here before Re.LSD…

I now have one fitted and adore it…
Most Exigers dont have one fitted though ,
I think for trackdays it is’nt essential.
For predictability though it’s Ace (wet driving is now a pleasure)

For drifting I would suspect harder tyres will be fitted as with the AO48’s you could get through a pair of rears in 20 minutes quite easily !!!

Is yours an S2 ? Can I ask who did it for you or was it a DIY job ? Any clues to price ?

Cheers !

I would have thought that if it was a day on Oulton’s purpose built ultra slippy drift circuit some lift off oversteer would be enough.
If you do get a diff and just want to drift with it I could find someone to weld it solid for ya

Your biggest problem with using an Exige/Elise for drifting is its natural balancing point is just off full lock so you need to be careful how much momentum you carry into the rotation

Yes mine is an S2 But it is a toyota not a honda…

As regards price 700 for Quaife diff
1000 + for fitting
I also fitted a comp clutch at the same time 350

Tricky job to do as the box has to come out and be comprehensively stripped…
In addition to this , special tools are needed for the box strip which my Lotus specialist of 30 years + did’nt already have …

I went to a fairly pointless training day at Lotus once, left early but I recall they had an Elise set up for just this. Speak to Russ at the show this weekend he your going, he’ll know the best set up for this. He probably wont like it but could save you penny or two!
