My S1 has developed a loud clunking noise which is suspension related but not to up and down movement-more front to back like over speed bumps and potholes!Car handles perfectly and all joints, bolts etc have been checked. Its impossible to decide where its coming from.It sounds like something is tapping the chassis somewhere.I’ve spent hours looking in every nook and cranny but can’t find anything wrong.Any ideas would be appreciated!
Dave, daft as it may seem, it could be a worn steering rack, although no perceptible play in the mechanism whilst driving/stationery. I had that problem, & a recon. steering rack sorted it out.
CV or inner tripod joint? - Have you jacked up car to see if excessive play in any? - if it is this, most likely one is inner tripod o/s.
I had a clunk that I would have put money on being a rear suspension mount loose. It only did it occasionally and there did not seam to be any sort of driving condition that brought it on.
In the end it was a cracked front anti roll bar mounting bush. To this day I can not believe this was the cause but it did cure the noise. It is an easy thing to check so I would have a look at this.
They do seem to have their fair share of noises these little cars …
Had to pull over twice on the way back from Anglesea to check that I’d not collected anything on the wheels … Turned out to be just strips of rubber flailing against the body …
I think the rollbar mounts looked OK but the steering rack does seem a possiblity. Is it likely that it could have gone in 20,000 miles?I have done quite a few track days and bounced a lot of kerbs!!You know it couldnt be my wallet,Graham, not with all my kids soaking up the cash.
Steering rack - if I correctly recall, mine started to “clunk” over bumpy surfaces at around 20k miles. It was not a safety “issue”, & I think I did about another 20k miles before having a recon unit fitted. From memory, the bit that was worn was a “plastic cup”. Titan make the racks, & do sell spares http://www.titan.uk.net/steering.php
PS Dave - if it turns out to be your teeth rattling, I know a good dentist (or two!!!)
He must have practised a lot then…
Don’t know about that, he still looked exactly the same last time I saw him

Thought his voice was a bit high!
Didnt think I had any left to lose!
Dave my similar clunk turned out to be driveshaft UJs
Maybe you have got Jimmy Saville trapped in the car…he is quite old now and unable to complete some of his better known catch phrases, hence the ‘clunk’ but no ‘click’…every trip
HTH
LOL @ Tim!
Must say, I thought he’d come up with a comment along the lines of “It’s the penny dropping that S2s rule!”
