Lotus Stage 3 to loud, ideas?

I was on a trackday at the weekend in France and due to the clamp down on noise my 06 Exige S with a stage 3 exhaust was to loud to go on track. Maximum allowed was 95 decibels at 75% throttle (static). Mine recorded 100 decibels.

Apparently a lot of circuits in France are starting to enforce the 95 decibel limit, which means I need to change my exhaust. Problem is I love the way my car sounds, in particular the popping and back firing on over run etc. I’ve never had the standard exhaust on the car but assume that you lose this?

Does anyone know of a suitable way of reducing the noise just for trackdays? Some friends whilst at Laguna Seca saw cars with some kind of mufflers that were fitted to reduce the noise.

Cheers Mark

In honesty I would dump the stage 3 if your looking to do trackdays and go with an 8" 2bular. Its nothing like as loud as the stage 3 and you do loose the pops but its still sounds great and will pass most noise tests.
I can only see noise tests getting more common and its not worth getting kicked off imho.

It is a real shame that the stage 3 is borderline on noise as it sounds glorious .
When they are nearly new they possibly will pass more tests.

One thing you could do is cut the end off and repack it ,then weld it back up .

I considered this with mine but never got round to it .

What I now have is 2bular with decat for the road and a sports cat to clip on when needed for track (if I ever get to one )

How many tracks days do you do? For the odd TD you could swap the back box for a stage 1…

I happen to have one for sale @ 50!!

2bular is the way forward, quieter yes but they still sound good.

I’ve got a standard exhaust that i could put out on but I do 5-6 tracks a year and I’m to lazy to swap it. I really really cannot live without the popping and back firing so am going to make it my mission to find a solution. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Any idea on the noise from the 2bular for static tests at 75% throttle?

Cheers Mark

Mine with the GT3 is low 90s or high 80s as there is no load, I always fail on drive by noise limits :frowning:

I dont get this loundness thing, I have a stage 3 and I think it sounds amazing. I would actually like it more angry. It dont seem as loud as some of the chav saloons ive seen cruising about. I love the pops and bangs but want some flames, I got my gf to follow me while i made it pop but no flame :frowning:, guess i need to get rid of the cat?

Just fitted the 2bular 8x22 and was noise tested at Oulton on Friday last week.
6500 rpm was 93 dec.
On my previous trackday at Oulton with the stage 3 on it was 97 dec at the same revs with the same tester & equipment.
Obviously weather plays a part in noise tests but was a fair comparison

Easytrack organisers were saying that noise restrictions are going to get much tighter at all circuits - Oulton is down from 105db to 103db and will only go lower.

All you decat boys best watch out - the 95db days can’t be far away

Have a word with Jim at 2ubular, he is now making a trackday silencer which I think is 5db quieter than his 8" x 22 offering. My 2008 240s blew out a baffle on the standard silencer and (under warranty)I had it replaced with a Stage 3. Although I do enjoy the noise at certain times, most of time it’s just too noisy under hard acceleration and irritable at cruise speed. I’m considering the 2ubular track day silencer, has anyone else had any experience of this version? Perhaps the 8" x 22" is perfectly acceptable. By the way this is my 1st thread despite having been a member for well over a year!

Welcome Andrew :sunglasses:

Welcome Andrew, the 8*22 should be ok as long as you don’t want to run too much more power, if you do the quiter tracks will become an issue, then you would need the trackday silencer.

Thanks Adrian, that answers my question, if in the future I ever want to consider 260 upgrade plus Jims 4-1 header and cat plus an airbox etc then noise levels will be going up again
