lotus stage 3 and larini exhausts road legal?

hi i will soon getting a exige s and would definantly like an aftermarket exhaust put on it that is loud and that POPS and BANGS

from my limited knowledge i understand both the lotus stage 3 exhaust and larini exhausts fit the bill. however are these road legal as i remember seeing a picture of an uninstalled stage 3 exhaust (i think) which had written on it “for track use only”. i also understand both these exhausts are loud which also makes me think that they may not be legal for the road. do people who have these installed tend to get done by the police for the exhaust being too loud?

my main worry is that if they are not road legal then iut may void my insurance if i ever had to claim (hopefully it will not come to that lol )

also are the any other exhausts that pop and bang?

thanks in advance

If you change the exhaust from standard you MUST inform your Ins Co, otherwise they could void your policy. “Normal” Insurers such as Admiral etc, will not normally cover you if you have any mods full stop.

“Loud” is not good, but “sporty” is. Exige attracts enough attention, without resorting to loud exhausts which will not be appreciated by many of the general public/police officers. Much better spending four or five hundred quid on a trackday or two

thanks for your reply mr pesky but i wasnt intending not to tell the insurance co. i plan on telling them i have an aftermarket exhaust on but my problem is that if that exhaust turns out not to be road legal as i mentioned above then it may void my insurance. do you know if any of the mentioned exhausts are road legal? sorry i do mean a want a ‘loudish’ sporty exhaust as you mention, i dont want it too loud, just quite loud . its just i want to make sure the exhuasts mentioned are road legal before i put them on my car as it will be used for road driving only im afriad. thanks again

Only your insurance company can give you a definitive answer  They’re the ones who would make the ultimate decision, not a load of tossers on a car forum.

the larini is defo sporty  and the whine of the charger with it is immense  heehee

its all down to personal choice matey but there are larini exhausts that are road legal just go on there website and drop them a call they are really helpfull.

We ran a stage 2 exhaust for a couple of years, which is comparable to a stage 3 and also has track use only written on it, never in that time did we have any problem with the police for noise levels, but you will struggle to get on track anywhere less than 105db’s and could still be a problem. I think another reason Lotus put the track use only tag on, is it makes the parts exempt from lotus warranty, maybe I’m being cynical but just a thought

admiral have insured me with my club sport larini exhaust, no extra cost

You must have caught them on a good day, Ash - well done

Go on utube an have a search for exige exhausts and you will find tons of vids to see what sort of noise you want. Ive had 3 aftermarket systems on my S until i found one i was happy with. My second one was too loud for tracks and for me, so choose carefully, as although you may not want to go on trackdays at the moment you may do in the future

Well Ive just been sold a stage 3 by a dealer, after reading this I have emailed lotus because I was sold it under the impression it was road legal. This is from a lotus pdf…

Not sure what to do now

As posted on the other thread, but I suppose if you spend your days thrashing around towns in first and second you might end up with an ASBO, but I doubt this the case, I know number of poeple running loud exhausts with no problem, but if your really concerned, hook yourself up a 2Bular and have done with it.
Or just remove the track only label and plead ignorance

What exhausts did you go through ? and which ones failed tracks ?

If you want pops and bangs the only way I have seen this is to take the cat off or put on a sport cat, I love the cup airbox as I just spend all my life enjoying the SC whine

thanks for that information drtroy. however i am sorry to hear you are in a tricky situation now :astonished:. thanks also marks2, i have already done a bit of research on youtube for most exhausts available for the exige and the lotus stage 3 n larini are my favourite  however looks like i will go for the larini exhaust now after what drtroy has said. does anyone know which larini exhausts are road legal and which ones are not? also im guessing any lotus warranty would be void if an aftermarket exhaust system is put on the car?

ok thanks ada i will take that into consideration

have a quicksilver on my exige non sc, backfires when down shifting and up, had a stage two on before and the quicksilver sounds so much better, just to put a fire work in the system lol

haha thanks james n will have a look at quicksilver ones 2

you will not be Disappointed, I say you need a louder exhaust just so when you have a female in the car and you cant be arsed to talk to them just dab the pedal and then you cant hear them talk. It is a head turner with the sound; still need an induction kit on it to finish it off, but the way it sounds at the moment puts a smile on my face.

hahaha yeah james your right i need a louder exhaust for the same reason…to drone out the noise of the girlfriend . i have listened to the quicksilver exhaust on a few clips now and i must say im impressed with the same and the pops and bangs

2006 S … With Lotus Stage 3 for last 2 years …
It can be made to pop and bang if required
On the other hand it’s possible to keep it quiet when needed.
Still got the cat on mine … No problems when noise checked at Oulton and Snetteton…

Passes my friendly MOT testers listen test …
Also what copper is going to dismantle your car to read “track use only” ??
Be polite to them if pulled and you will be fine …They have a job to do , and , if you are friendly towards them they will more than likely be friendly back…

Get a lotus stage 3 … it’s great!!
