Anybody know what the spec for this was??
Possibly available in the S2.
Here are the bullet points about the S1 Lotus Sport car that was sold as a track-only car in the USA, circa 2000. Itād be kinda nice if it had part numbers to go with it:
Engine:
- Transverse mid mounted 4 cylinder water-cooled, w/ oil cooler
- displacement 1795 cc; Bore 80 mm; Stroke 89.3 mm
- Torque 150 lbs-ft
- Power 203 bhp
- Maximum rpm 8000
- double overhead camshaft w/ hydraulic tappets
- electronic multi-point fuel injection
- electronic engine management
- lightweight performance exhaust and air intake
Thanks for that Betoā¦Its in line with what the owner told me, so thats a good start.
Wonder what ECU they used?
Iāll try to locate the part nos.
Cheers
The hardware should be an Esprit ECU, which is sourced from EFI Italy.
Whipping out my āLotus Sport Service Partsā manual (part number of the manual is ALS1T0014J), chapter 17, Verse 04, the āPROGRAMMABLE RACECAR KITā ECU is ALS1M0036F. The ākitā should include:
- an adapter for the wiring harness (ALS1M0037F)
- Baro Sensor (ALS1M0038F)
- Software (ALS1M0039F)
- Download Cable (ALS1M0040F)
Provided these items are intact, you donāt need an Emerald. If not, call Lotus Sport, price it, and subtract from your offer price!
The S2 VHPD was pretty muich the same spec as the S1 VHPD but with better mapping.
Dan
Yeah I hear the S2 VHPD map was a massive step forward from either the 177 or 190 S1 maps, but obviously the ECU wont plug straight in. However I recon it would be a good upgrade and maybe cheaper than an Emerald, although I guess they are pretty rare.
Hydraulic tappets? Surely notā¦ with the cam specs you need to get 200brake out of a K, at revs, Iād not have thought hydaulic tappets would have been a viable option.
All VHPD variants use the 872 profile and solid followers.
You can get over 200BHP using BP285H cams, but the VHPD spec was determined well before these were available and there were other reasons for going for solid followers.
Dave
Can one still achieve 200BHP with cams etc but retaining the original Lotus ECU?
Clive
Forget the Lotus ECU, mate! Whatās the point in changing cams etc, only to then use a crap map?
Fit an Emerald, & do the job properly, dude!

Thirded and if you want to keep the wiring standard - look at Georges write up of his Exige re-build where he is using a BMW 318 ECU connector ā¦
Come on Clive!!!
OK Ok Guys ā¦only reason was to keep car as original as possā¦Will talk to George when I visit NZ this winter.
If you look at the clasifieds it seems to me that the converted cars have lost value whilst the original ones are showing only slight depreciation. ā¦therefor if I get a guru to modify my new engine I need to know that the emerald can be removed and Lotus replacedā¦Of course by the time I have paid for all that I will have spent more than Iād loose anyway
Anybody like a winter project to rebuild a K ??
Clive, ya daft old giffer, why worry about a āperceivedā bit of depreciation, - just enjoy the bloody thing properly whilst you can!
Oh and the non original colours are even worseā¦well some have increased in value of course
See ya Friday Robbo.
Clive mate,
Very admiral of youā¦ BIG respect!
If you keep all the original bits in a box (something I still have!!!) then the future āvalueā will be just unpacking it away!
My VHPD was DVAād as well as diff cams, plus the Emeraldā¦ but it was still a VHPD!!!
Longevity wise, it will be better, give you more power and mpg, and the BEST bit is you will leave the N/A rice burners behind and really wind up those with ānon standardā colours!
I am going to buy shares in DW anticipating the extra bizā¦
ooooooo I like the bit about the rice burnersā¦better get an order in fast.! now whereās my pension book???
Go for it Clive - you know you want to.
I have gone the Emerald route, and never looked back - much more drivable. I also have all of my original parts, and also like to keep the running car as practically original as possible. But, my engine is about to die, so I am having mine DVAād in December. Looking forward to seeing how it goes once re-installed and run in!
Cheers,
(another) Clive.
Clive ā¦we are a rare breed ā¦ must stick togetherā¦
Quite possible our engines will be nestling at DVAās together.
What exactly are you having done??
Cheers
