Sorry for the delay, Im gradually pulling my body out the gutter as Im totally knackered still and I have it all to do again this weekend!! I need a holiday from racing (how sad is that!!).
All in all I had a good weekend. Qualifying has become almost predictable with me sitting 3rd in class and a couple of tenths off the pole sitter. However, given my previous form this was nothing of concern as I seem to pull it back in the race itself…
Race 1.
I didnt actually see what happened at the front of the pack, but there is a big incident as bits of cars are flying into the air. I am on the inside to it though and well away from it this time (for once ). After rounding Paddock Hill I am already up into first place past Mick Edwards and James K who poled in our group. Guess who’s sitting right infront of me now?? Non other than our very own Mr Bicknell in his stealth beastie as we dive up to Druids. Thinking Im doing the right thing, I jump onto the back of him in the hope he will drag me through the feild attached to his bumper for the rest of the first lap. As it is Shaun takes a tight line into Driuds along with everyone else it would seem causing us all to break up early and leaving a dirty great big gap up the outside. Before I know it I’ve got Paul Harding literally driving around the outside of me as if I was stood still as we round Druids itself…[censored]! I should have been doing that to Shaun!! (no kid gloves next time mate :wink). I have a go back at Paul into Graham Hill and get myself up the inside of him for the run into Surtees when the safety car boards come out and Paul backs off letting me by. I let him back past around clearways as we form up behind the safety car for what will be the best part of the race. 8,9,10 laps? I dont know, it was along time but when you saw what had happen between Skeggsy and SteveW you can see why. Thankfully both were out of their cars and moving around so I did nothing other than concentrate on the re-start. Paul was awake and got away from the line well with me follwing tight and Mick hot on my heels. Into druids again from a slow start lap and I run defensive to stop Mick diving up the inside. Damn me, he goes and does exactly the same as thing as Paul Harding did and drives straight around the outside of me!! No chance to have a go back straight away this time so I drop in behind him and wait for the right moment. As it was it never came, both myself and Mick slowed off slightly as we scrapped for positon allowing Paul to start pulling away a cars length everytime Me and Mick diced. 4-5 laps after the restart the reds were out for a car in the sand trap at the bottom of Paddock so I simply ran out of time to do anything. So third in class for me for a chnage and a new winner at the top of Class A.
Well done Paul you drove a great race (just dont do it to often)
Race 2.
No handicap race this weekend so race 2 grid positions were taken from the 2nd fastest times in qualifying. No change for class A as Im still sitting 3rd behind Mick and JamesK on Pole. A good start puts me in front of James into Paddock and I have Christian and Mick infront of me going down the hill. So, into Druids again for the first time from a ‘start’ run with heavy traffic… I damned if Im taking a tight line this time and having someone 'do me ’ 3 times in the same place!! So I go wide around the outside of Mick in the hope to do unto him as he did to me!! I didnt quite pull it off but I had the inside line into Graham hill as we rounded it toghether and run up to Surtees. Thats it, he’s mine and he falls in behind as we hit Clearways for the first time… Short lived though Im afraid gents… As we came round to Graham hill for the 2nd time I was running on the correct line this time but made a mistake and came in a little too fast losing the back end… I thought I had caught it but it just snapped back the other way and chucked me onto the grass. A spin was enivetable but somehow I managed to keep it from going back onto the track infront of everyone and get it pointing in the right direction again. A quick look in the rear view and the whole of class A are now rounding Graham hill so instead of just barging my way back onto track and causing chaos for them I waited for them to pass and rejoined right at the back of pack. I dont remember much from the next 5 minutes as the red mist came down a little and it was just a case of overtake as many as I could to get back up the feild… Hey up, whats this?? Another safety car?? Brilliant…I can pull up to the back of the leaders who are currnetly totally out of site… As the feild bunched back up the order became imediately apparent as Paul Harding, Mick, Hans and Andy Gordon came back into sight (1st,2nd,3rd,4th) with me immediately behind them… wayhay im still in for a chance them!! as it was the the safety cars was out for far too long as they struggled to pull a car from the sand trap at Clearways and it meant time that should of been spent taking on the leaders was spent in formation…Bolloxs!! On the restart I got such a good drive on Andy Gordon that I had to back off so as not to cross the line before him so missed the best chance to get past there by being just a fraction to eager. The last 2-3 laps of the race were spent all over Andy’s rear calm who just would not get out of the way (fair play mate you held well under pressure). While Paul Hardings exhaust manifold failed filling his cabin with exhaust gasses and he bomded out of first place leaving me to come home in 4th place with Mick Edwards getting his First win in Class A (really well done mate) Hans to take second (not for the want of first !!) and AndyG a 3rd in his 2nd ever race. Brilliant!!
Obviously I was a bit dissapointed at myself for chucking away first place but hey, you cant win everything alll the time and a few mistakes here and there are good for the rest of the guys and my own ego…
Roll on silverstone and the chance to climb back to the top…
