Locking Wheel Nuts.

Every time I come to swap over a set of wheels I have problems with the locking wheel nuts, usually ending in a trip to the local tyre specialist for help.

Mine is a 2004 car, & has a locking socket that allows only about half the bite or depth onto the nut, hard to measure, but about 3mm.

Even with a decent length of lever & keeping everything square as possible the socket always just slips of the nut, without having gained any real purchase to shift the nut. Very frustrating.

The tyre specialist has to use an impact wrench, which does the job but is a bit harsh & may have damaged the socket

Has anyone had similar problems, & whats the solution?

Can anyone recommend a better alternative lock nut to the original?

Thanks in advance for any help.

you know the solution…

chuck them to f$%k and use standard wheel nuts

Cheers Rox, that may well be the answer

It’s just the security thing I need to consider.

I think theft is pretty low risk when compared to the hassle of not being able to get the wheels off when you want them off.

Your wheels won’t actually fit anything else - i suppose another S2 exige or 111R owner might want them… but honestly, i think the risk is low. However, I have heard lots of horror stories about broken and/or otherwise screwed up locking nuts… like i say, chuck them away

totally agree - had mine mashed by a dealer who didn’t crack on until I noticed it. If you really want to, stamp your name/postcode on the inside of the rims. It wont stop them being nicked - but that’s not very likely - but if they go up for sale there’s a fair chance someone on here might buy them and being honest would pipe up.

yeah ditch the locking nuts. When was the lst time you saw a car on bricks. Plus if the guy brings a low enough jack to get under it, then fair play to him. lol

I have also heard many many stories of the locking wheel nut key being lost, or broken or not inserted correctly and rounding off.

Sean…
