Knocking Noise - steering feeling odd

I’ve an Exige S 2006 and recently it’s not feeling to good at the front end. It’s as if something is loose. When I’m driving there is occasionally a very minor noise, hardly noticeable but the steering definitely does not feel right. It’s as though something feels loose.

I’ve got it jacked up right now and I cannot see any issues, there is no significant play in any of the bushes and everything seems to be ok.

Any suggestions welcome, keen to get it resolved and feeling as it should ASAP.

How old are your front tyres?

They’re basically slicks. Intending on replacing them ASAP.

If they’re A048’s and slick you do loose the feeling on the front end, it’ll feel like a new car with some fresh boots on. As for the knock if all the rod ends, bushes and ball joints are ok, check the steering rack for play

Coming to the conclusion it is the rack. How can you check it for play. When I’ve got the wheels of the ground and I shake the wheels I can hear a slight knocking noise from the rack. The car has only done 15,000 miles. Are the racks none weak components?

Yeah they’re Ao48 and agree have had the same problem when they’ve been worn previously. Thanks for the help

Get someone to hold the steering wheel, whilst you move a wheel (or vice versa if you prefer  )

Check the pinch bolt is tight at the bottom of the steering column, this is a common problem with the S2 +

Do u get to this from inside the car?

This should help, looks like its a rack off job

Inside the car at the bottom of the column

Sorry Ade, i guess you mean the pinch bolts on the universal joints.

I certainly do

Checked, thinking it must be the rack. Thanks for all the posts. Anyone know how much i’m looking at? Also considering the quicker ratio rack, anyone fitted one?
