Me and my boyfriend brought an Exige on Saturday. We drove it back from Southampton with no problems and now it wont start!! Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
It’s usually alarm related. We are blessed with the shittest quality alarms on earth. There are some threads on here about resetting them, have a search.
Got any more details. Is it an S1 or S2 exige, which engine is in it, does it turn over, if not is the starter solenoid clicking??
Its an S1 with a standard 192 VHPD engine. Its turning over but wont fire, seems to be symptoms of engine flooding. Battery is now very weak. Should my boyfriend try cleaning up plugs and fresh battery? Also what are the chances the coil pack has just packed up?
If the battery is even slightly low, the engine will turn over, but the ECU won’t trigger any sparks. Definately try charging it, or a fresh battery.
They are a bit prone to flooding in these circumstances, so yes, cleaning up the plugs is a good idea. You might want to turn the engine over a few times with the fuel pump disconnected to empty out the cylinders. (Sorry, I don’t know where the connection is).
If the battery is a few years old i.e 4 + it may well be worth replacing for a new one… The S1 has a high crank requirement. I dont profess to be particularly mechanical or electrically minded but if it apears to turn over but struggles to fire I would check the battery has a full charge and fix first (assuming imobiliser isnt on)… after thaat the list can go on and on…
If you search on here there is plently of threads re battery choice… I went with the halfords one in the end, but went with a high crank version of the elise recommended battery as their Exige recommended battery was far too big to fit …
Good luck and hope you enjoy your new purchase…

Thanks to all of you, I have let my boyfriend know and i will let you know of the progress.
To clear out a flooded engine, push the throttle to the floor before starting it and hold it there while starting it. It normally then doesnt put any fuel in while it turns over to allow you to clear the excess petrol out.
Its saved me, and worked on other cars, bound to work on the S1 too.

this happened to me when the battery was low.
Mine seemed to flood easily with the standard ECU - not had a problem since replacing the ECU (with an emerald), battery and keeping it topped up on the optimate thing while it’s stood in the garage.
New battery and clean/new plugs should do it
Could be that the earth has come loose from the chassis and just needs retightening perhaps???
It could simply be that you have not pressed the alarm button before re-starting. The alarm turns it self on automaticaly and this will stop the engine fireing up!
mine wont turn over before the single press of the remote.
The power to internals and the binacle comes on but no power to the starter.
Assume they are all the same?

Yup, as you’ve described that’s the correct action of the immobiliser… these have been known to behave oddly before. On my old S1 Elise it used to work or not work at will… in that often you’d have driven a few miles before you realised the “ALARM” light on the dash was still blinking.
I guess theoretically it COULD stuff up and immobilise the ignition while still allowing the starter to crank + fuel pump to prime, but I doubt it.
Actually, there’s a thought… can you hear the fuel pump when it’s cranking over? Usually the fuel pump will prime for a few seconds when the key is first turned on (if it’s been off for more than a few minutes), and then will also run while the engine is cranking… it could possibly be that your fuel pump has died or has an intermittant connection and isn’t working and it’s not getting any fuel.
Just to let everyone know my boyfriend cleaned the plugs and recharged the battery and it started, yay!! Thanks.
Hey! I got something right
Glad we could help. Enjoy the new car!
Now we just need some pictures
