Yes you do. In the tank, surrounds the pump.
Life of car apparently!! The colour of some I have changed when changing pumps suggests that maybe not so much!
Is there an arguement for having one in the fuel line that can be inspected/changed and removing the other one if fiddling with the pump?

Have taken one apart to see what it was in it. Much use of hacksaw and swearing required!
It’s quite a clever thing, as it clips together with the top part of the pump housing to drop into the top of the tank, holds the fuel gauge sensor and also secures the pump in place. Clearly nothing to do with Lotus then!!
Am sure it’s doable, but probably less agro to change the filter every now and then.
