Has anyone ever experienced severe vibration from the rear of the car which only occurs when backing off the power?
There’s no vibration at all while on the power, which leads me to thinking that it’s not a CV joint. It’s happened both on the rolling road and while the car was jacked up with no wheels on (to make sure it wasn’t a wheel balance issue)
Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated, as even the chap at the rolling road said he’d never felt anything like it.
Thanks for the suggestion. I had a look at all the previous posts on this kind of subject. It’s the part where im getting the problem coming off the power while everyone else had it on the power that’s confusing the issue at the moment.
You’re right, mine was on the power, and it was the tripod joint (the internal ones are tripod)
It happens when there is play (in my case because it had been fitted worngly and it wore prematurely) and thee is some torque (uner power) that makes it move off centre, so that the rotational mass is no longer balanced, therefore the vibration. Then backing off, it will seat again in the centered position and no vibration.
Could it be that in your case the wear pattern makes it lock on centre while accelerating and with the reverse torque of the engine off-throttle, it goes off centre?
I would look at the CV and tripod joints. Failing that (or let’s say, not failing ) I would look at the bearings.
If you want some professional opinion why not contacting GKN? They make the bloody things…
Found it, it was the tripode joint occasionally locking up under load reversal, just to be sure I cleaned out all the CV joints, checked that everything was ok, put it all back together and now everything seems to be ok.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, I think I’ll just chalk that one up to the ‘newness’ wearing off.
It had plenty of grease and practically no signs of wear. Must have been some crud in there somewhere I guess. Though I did notice in the process that my driveshafts are slightly different to a spare set I’ve got so i’m going to have to look into that next.
Russ! I’m hoping to be at Snett and I’ve got one less excuse not to be now.
