today the IACV unit on my S1 exige (same as the one on a V8 Esprit) has died, the price for a new one at the stealer is almost like me asking him:
i don’t need a complete engine it’s just an IACV unit i need
therefore if you have one collecting dust please let me know, i can paypal you
I though mine had, but took it off and gave it a very good clean with brake fluid cleaner… SO much gunk came off inside the rotar valve! This was binding on the body of the valve and stopping it working correctly!
Re-installed it and all now fine!
Yep, they are over 200 to replace! Cleaning is cheaper!
Cheers Simon, Yes still about although Im still not using the car much
Yes I’ve just had a look and noticed it was in a metal casing rather than the plastic one on the Elise.
I noticed though that the bracket was broken that holds it in place and its just dangling by the blue hoses! Does anyone know if that would affect its performance?
And as Steve says, if anyone could give a few pointers on how to dismantle / clean it that would be brill
Yep bracket failure seems to be a common fault - I just use a large jubilee clip (Lotus part no A111023478 )fixed over the broken bracket to hold IACV in place

Easy peesy!
Assuming you have easy access (ha ha!) and the carbon airbox is removed as well as the rear tray front, there is a large jubilee type clip holding the IACV tight to the block. Undo the 2 jubilee clips from the 2 blue hoses first, then unclip the leccy lead going into the plug on the left side of the IACV. Once all off, undo the Jubilee clip and the IACV is free!
Cleaning… I just covered over the female plug, then flushed the rotary valve (that allows ECU metered air from the airbox to the underside of the intake manifold) with brake cleaner or the like. Mine was full of oily soot from the breather hoses! Now works fine!
Doesnt sound too bad… once the airbox is off of course
I’ve just literally been out in it for the first time in ages (I still love it) and it was fine when I first started it but then I stopped for petrol, and it wouldnt idle at all after that. Does that sound consistant with the IACV being at fault?
but iacv is deffo on it’s last legs
have thoroughly cleaned it about 8 weeks ago with brake cleaner, removing an amount of sludge
but now same problem again ie,
one day revs at tickover are below 600 rpm bringing the motor to a halt
at different days revs at tickover stay at 3000 rpm, if you then restart it after a few minutes, tickover is normal at 1200 rpm,
some days tickover is and stays at 1200 rpm for the wole journey
i have replaced brown sensor, so iacv is the last and final hope
have found a company sj sportscars which sell new ones unfortunately they haven’t replied to my message (a new iacv should costs 188 pounds in their shop)
It sounds like we are both experiencing the same problems.
Although on mine the idle speed is not too high, it just keeps dropping. In fact it doesnt idle at all.
I did have a problem with the tickover sticking at 2500rpm a couple of years back though but that ended up being a broken connector on the throttle pedal.
Just got to clean it and put it all back together now
Another question though, the whole thing was lose and dangling on top of the drive shaft.
Does anyone know if being banged about may have caused it to work intermitantly???
The bracket on mine had broken as well, have repaired it temporary with tie-wraps, new bracket is on it’s way for 5 quid.
Have ordered a new iacv at SJ Sportscar Ltd a Lotus Specialist at the friendly price of 188 quid (compared to 260 quid for as second hand item in Holland)
Should arrive next week, have cleaned the current one a couple of weeks ago, but this lasted only for 2 weeks…
These valve are prone to wear as during it’s usage a lot of sludge passes the valve so after a number of years the mess just starts to stick and cleaning it doesn’t seem to do the trick completely
Allthough looking at the price you can still try
