How to arm the fire suppression system
Well, I stand corrected!

Never know the Exige/Elise was so prone to catching fire…

… Perhaps the new model should be called the ‘Pinto’!!!
To be fair (and I may be corrected here) - but I think most of the elises/exiges that have caught fire have been engine conversions or DIY jobs…

I don’t think I’ve heard of a standard one go up in flames ?

Unlike the Pinto!!!

has there usually been a catastrophic failure that has made them catch fire? I don’t think they are prone to just com-busting like like several Italian cars have done in the last few years…
That said I really should get a system fitted :astonished:

There have been various causes of fire - loose fuel line/filler fittings, oil leaks (including from filters), & driveshaft boots splitting & chucking grease onto exhaust.

I seem to recall all of the above occuring over the years in race cars - both modified & oem engine specs.

There’s absolutely no need to scaremonger/panic, but just do your own risk assessment of your car, & its useage. If it already has a fire extinguisher, keep it & maintain properly, & if it hasn’t carefully consider the downsides of that!

Happy motoring!

My VHPD equipped S1 caught fire in spectacular fashion at Oulton Park on a track day.

Basically the Crank broke and spat a piece out through the sump. The red hot oil then sprayed all over the redder and hotter exhaust and it went up in pretty spectacular fashion!!

The most frightening thing was how quickly the cabin completely filled with smoke, to the point I had to open the door so I could see to drive off the circuit. If I hadn’t had a plumbed in fire extinguisher I would have lost the car. Thankfully the fire was put out by the system and my car lived.

It is also very Ibiza club-esque how you get covered in foam by the interior nozzle.

I wouldn’t seriously track a car with out an extinguisher

PMSL.

So basically i have gone from taking the system out because its for comp regs. To Nearly all Elise/Exige variants having a fire at some stage in their lifespan apart from Some guy called Pete in Oz.
Now i have to make sure it works, make sure it is serviced and carry some glow sticks for the Ibiza moments. Jeez!!!
