How long until the S1 value overtakes the S2?

Does anyone think that the S1 Exige is starting to appreciate and at what point will its price be higher than an S2?
My local main dealer has a mint low mileage S2 in for just over 24k, thats not much more than a mint S1.
Do you reckon an immaculate, low mileage, FSH, never tracked S1 is worth keeping a hold of, rather than px-ing it for an S2?

Seasonal (trackday) pricing on the S1, so it’s hard to tell.

It would be nice tough!

Ian

Be warned 40 years ago my Ford GT 40 cost me 4k
I sold it for 3.5K a year later. 10 years after that it was scrap in a garage…15 years later it appreciated to million… everything comes to he who waits…if he’s still alive!!!

Ok but would anyone swap a mint S1 for an S2 and why???

Brendan did it.

and I’m glad he did

and I’m glad he did

WHY???

As much as I loved my S1, after 4 1/2 years I had just had enough of it. I don’t have the time/money to do lots of track days and the S2 is sooo much better as an every day motor.

To be honest, part of the problem was that initially really enjoyed the hardcore feel, and made the car more and more extreme with harnesses, no stereo, sports exhaust, cat bypass, UCR gearbox etc. It was fantastic fun when I was in the mood, but it demanded me to be “in the mood” every time I drove it. By comparison the S2 is no worse to drive in traffic than a hot hatch while still feeling a bit special, but then it feels just like a ‘proper’ Exige when you give it a good spanking. The combination of a brake servo and ABS make a big difference to your confidence on unpredictable muddy/wet back roads whereas the S1 brakes (with pagid RS14s and braided hoses but standard crappy disks) had a lovely feel, but seemed inadequate with the A048 tyres. Maybe I’ve got weak legs or something, but I can’t remember ever locking up the wheels because it takes a huge amount of pedal effort.
The S2 may be heavier, so the acceleration feels a little bit off the S1 initially, but it does seem better for overtaking on the road thanks to more slippery aerodynamics/actually having the claimed power.

Handling wise, the S2 seems massively more progressive and controllable at the limit, which is good for somebody as ham-fisted as me

Then there’s the looks. I love the raw racer style of the S1, but I was never entirely thrilled with the basic design of the Elise S1 it was based on. I don’t believe the slightly retro 60’s looks are appropriate for a modern Lotus. Certain details always looked a bit cheap and kit-carish. I hate the front bonnet, the headlamps, the indicators, the fake vents (most of the front end, then ), and the overlap of the rear clam over the sills.
To my eyes, the S2 looks a much better piece of design. The details are all beautiful and the stance is squatter, and meaner. The only things I would change are the side pods (removed, or painted), and I’d like a full width rear wing.

Then there’s the interior; the S1 is very simple and functional, but the S2 feels special and beautiful with some nice details and better materials. A decent heater and proper aircon make a real difference to proper year-round useability.

Finally, my S1 was not exactly the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. Some people hate the VHPD engine, but I actually really liked its noise and driving characteristics. Trouble is, I just don’t trust it to last The idea of a standard Japanese motor, and a two year warranty was a huge attraction for me.

and I’m glad he did

WHY???

Because he bought it!

Wow, did I really write that much?

And I forgot to mention the added benefit of reduced ear-ache from 'er indoors whenever I suggest we go out in the Lotus. She never did get on with the S1

The perfect excuse for keeping the S1…LOL!!!

Unfortunately not… she would make me drive her SLK instead

Nice one Brendan, I could’ve written those posts myself

Tim.

Yup, agreed, except I prefer the S1’s looks. Surprisingly to me, last year at Le Mans we had a few people looking over Pesky’s & The Edwardz S1’s and my S2 lined up together, and a high proportion of them said they preferred the S2.

Only earache I get is why she has to let me drive it occasionally

Yes but the French never had any taste!!!

I actually like the S2.
And would probably buy one, if it was lighter than the S1.

Only one way: LIGHTER!
