How long should brake discs last & what to replace

Morning all - I tried this on SELOC but they started arguing amongst themselves and I didn’t get any real answers so I’m posting here now !

I know this is difficult to answer given the variables but how long would you expect a set of discs to last on an Exige S running about 275BHP used for fast road and track work only.

Mine has done 14k now.

If you think they should be replaced what do you recommend

Quite fancy the Lotus Sport Kit that Dave has for sale given mine is a non PP car

Any other ideas?

Cheers

Morning

The way to tell if you discs are worn out is to measure the thickness, some people are harder on brakes than others, do you use you car on track?

Brake disc thickness
New 26.0 mm (1.02 in)
Service minimum 24.9 mm (0.98 in)

Hope this helps

Oh and there’s a huge thread on here about brakes 4 or 2 pot etc etc

Car is for fast road and track mainly. It is nice down here today so maybe I’ll take a wheel off and have a look

No average mileage then?

I tried searching (not very hard!) what key words should I use !

Ok I can’t find It now.
My opinion on big brakes is that you lose the modulation that have with the
2 pots, and the pedal can feel like a bit of an on/off switch. I think 295mm or 304mm AP or Alcon rotors with suitable ally bells and spacing out the 2pots to fit, gives you the best of both worlds more power and good modulation. The factory 211’s use 2pots and if it’s good enough for them its good enough for me.

I think I did 10 TD’s in just under 18 months and had to change front AP’s and rear OEM Lotus drilled…both lasted the same time, full of surface cracks. Maybe 6-7k.

I find front discs/pads last 18000 miles. No track days, just enthusiastic road work.

(240pp - with the big, original type AP’s. Incidentally, I am picking her up from factory Tuesday after getting the 260 map and tea tray and engine mounts. Can’t wait.)

My thoughts - I’m about to change my front AP’s even though they have only done 4k, reason - the drilled versions clog up all the fookin time on track so I’ll be fitting the vaned versions

Other than that the AP kit is a fit and forget. Don’t do what loads of people have done and try different solutions and still come back to the AP 4 pots after chucking loads of money away

All IMHO - you’ll soon see there are lots of differing opinions on here - Pete the pilot loves his alcon discs and lots of peeps like the Carbon Lorraine pads

Whatever you go with stay away from drilled discs

Whatever Boothy’s got will need replacing once he unleashes 270 + bhp

About a dozen trackdays for me trashed my original discs, total mileage of about 8k, my AP’s and 4 pots last about the same but the increase in brake performance is worth the extra cash.

AP 4 pots and the biggest disks you can fit.

Yes… and you are just about to really SHOW OFF!!!
