Seen 99 on MY08 Exige S in traffic on a warm day
seen over 100 stuck in traffic after a long drive. it was at about 97 on a track day
Never over 95
I was reading the S2 handbook when I got may car and in there it says upto 120 is acceptable!!!
I have seen 110 going up a mountainside at pace, outside temp was not far off 40c.
With aircon turned off, my Exige S goes up to as high as 98 when sitting in traffic afterwhich fans will kick in and temp goes down to 92-93 degrees and the whole process repeats.
With aircon on, temp never goes beyond 92-93 degrees when sitting in traffic.
When on the move, temps stay consistently at 87-90 degrees.
All the above in average 30-33 degrees ambient.
Guys Im thinking that the cooling system in the Lotus is not that efficient.
On my MR2 which has the 2ZZ engine, normal running temps are 82-85degC sitting in traffic it will go to 90deg max. Fans should be on at this point and bring the temps down. Mind you this is with a radiator originally designed for the 1ZZ-FE(elise S engine)
One crucial difference is that the MR2 has no flat undertrays but really im thinking exiges have a cooling efficiency issue here.
My old exige wihich didnt have oil coolers saw 104 on an italian mountain. My new one with oil coolers crept over 96 once in two weeks abroad.

Hey thanks for the info guys, maybe it’s just normal for S2’s to run a bit hot in traffic. What’s the theory of air con being able to regulate engine temps?
Dave
When the aircon is on, I believe the fans run from a lower temp if not on all the time.
When aircon is off, fans kick in only when temp hits 98 degrees and once temp falls to 94, they switch off.
When aircon is on, fans are always running at half speed.
Fans go on full speed when temp is at 103 degrees, going down to half speed at 98 and so on.
Oh, at road speeds of 85mph/135kmh, all fan functions are switched off.
Mine went up to 118 i think it even hit 120, but that was cause my coolant hose came off. It starts flashing over 113. Got fixed. Then the head gasket went and it was up there again at 118 though at over 70mph it was kept cool by the air though not very good for the engine. All fixed now, But i make sure i keep an eye on it now.
