How do you remove the roof on an S1 Exige...

the car is in the bodyshop, and the roof has to come off for respraying.

Detailed instructions would be appreciated.

Cheers, Mark

Can’t help with a detailed explanation but you have to take the rear clam off to be able to take the roof off.

Well at least that was true of mine when I had it resprayed. Once the rear clam was off the roof comes off very easily indeed.

Yep, rear clam off, then it’s simply two clips that you can see from inside the car that are near the rollover hoop.

And the three screws at the front behind the plastic caps, to release the pad that holds it to the front screen surround

Unless your car is like Sean’s…whose roof is not fastened at all at the front*

  • usual crap preparation**

Is it really not possible to get the roof off without the rear clam coming off. I was going to remove mine to sort some harmonic resonations out with the rear panels but I wont bother if the rear clam needs removing.

it just needs moving back about 2-3 inch to get the roof off. If you have a motorsport roof it WILL come off without having to pull the clam back as its shorter.

Hehe…trouble is those 2-3 inches are the worst

Now I’m a little lost, yes I know that’s not hard… I have the roof ready to rock at the back but I’m a little confused as to the three bolts under the plastic caps at the front. Do these need to come out, mine seem to be turning with FA happening?

There is a crash pad inside that those 3 bolts go through and basically you have 3 captive nuts in the roof so you sandwich the roof to the screen surround.
If those bolts are just spinning its a fair chance the captive nuts are no longer captive.
They have to come out to release the crash pad … and so the roof
One suggestion would be have someone pull up on the roof while you try and undo them to try and get some friction on the uncaptive nuts …

Its done, crazy  With the back of the roof unattached all I did was tilt the roof (back up in the air) and pull towards the rear. How simple was that… I’d managed to confuse myself having thought it would be the same as the S2!

…now make sure that you put it back on!!

“The roof does not come off an S1.”

Lol it does if the car needs painting Mike
