High Speed Stability

Hi All

I’m no racing driver - hang on I am !!! but I have an issue with my car which is confusing my slightly (ok not difficult)

Here we go - did Anglesey for the first time yesterday and loved the circuit. Couldn’t hit a single apex all morning but after some [color:#FF0000]DRIVER TRAINING [/color] I was finding a reasonable line and enjoying myself in the PM.

But no matter what I did I still couldn’t get the very fast right hander right (church ?). Tried different lines and sh*t myself a couple of times but always felt the car was unstable.
Can’t say if it was under/oversteer - just didn’t feel planted and gave me little confidence

My previous 07 car was fine through these type of corners (Island at Oulton is a similar high speed corner) but my 2010 car feels unstable.

This is where I need some guidance from my fellow exigers.

Do we think this is suspension/geo or an aero issue ?

As a side note I was following Sean through the high speed section and as I got closer I did feel the front wash out on me which would normally signify a loss of front downforce****

*** Please note I might be talking absolute sh*t

I’d say geo would be your first port of call, mine felt the same in factory setup, car was transformed and I mean transformed, after a quick visit to Chris at Hoffmans
They did geo while I waited whole thing took about 2 hours.

I think it will be geo mate, mine used to feel a little like that on that bend but now I can honestly keep it FLAT and it feels great since the Nitron geo.

Lift before turn then power all the way Chris…lol but like you in the PM today

Lift? I’m having to brake or I would end up with a close encounter with the Irish Sea :astonished:

As for you problems, there are a few subtle bumps round church that unsettled my car the more I pushed, a couple of times I needed opposite lock as well (a small brown trouser moment) at 100mph or so.

I in the morning was having loads of “confidence” troubles as well but an extra 2psi all round seemed to fix that

I’m with Ade - quick dab of brakes to load up the front end

Yeah a lift or a dab of the brakes. Also a bit of fine tuning of the dampers would see it ironed out. It is a tricky corner to get right though.

The Geo will be fine, John knows what he is doing.

Softer, hards not always the way

Thanks Sean - and the rest of you guys.

Lots of confidence in JSR and after a chat with John I’m going to soften the dampers a touch - maybe running them a little too stiff (hate fooking body roll).
Going to change the tyres as the fronts are the original’s and have 5K in them plus loads of heat cycles.
As a final precaution I’ll get the geo checked again.

If that lot doesn’t work I’m going to stick the biggest fooking wing on it, close my eyes and pray !!!

He certainly does! I’ve ran with John’s set up on my cars for the last few years

Imagine how quick you would be if you actually had some ability Gav!!

Cheeky x

In addition to this question.

I face stability problems above 200 Km/hour in a right line. (Autobahn).

Up to 200 Km no problem, but above the front end gets “light”.
Above 220 Km/hour it gets scary and very nurving to drive.

I have 2- way Oilins and Riverie rear wing. Would a new front splitter bring any controll over above problem?

Cheers

Q.

I will swap your reverie wing for my standard sized carbon one, this will of course fix both of our problems

In reality I suspect you need a bigger splitter to balance the affect of the rear wing.

Sounds like a lack of balance, what ride height do you run, and do you have a 10mm of rake rear to front.
I did 220km/h on the autobahn and the car felt planted. That’s a standard car with 1 way Nitron trackday pro spec dampers 120mm front 130mm rear

Agree front splitter to match rear wing is also a good idea

I must say my dampers are not set really hard, if anything I run them quite soft and my car feels really planted now on that bend.
When I ran with the previous very hard set up the car always felt nervous through there.
My car does seem to roll a little looking at the photo taken on Saturday but I find the set up really nice for my needs.

p.s. I managed a 90mph entry to Church with a max 125 when I dared to take my eyes off the road on Saturday which I was rather chuffed with.
Previously the car felt like I would not like to take it much over 100.

And yes that was FLAT.

You were going hugely better than I remember you doing last year matey - track time and tuition must have helped… nice one!

Cheers Dave, yep I really felt I was hooking it together and then I went for some Driver training with Tim Arnold.
He pointed out that I drive in what he called the old style by driving deep into the hairpin and the bookatrack banking in order for a large sweep out at the apex.
This I believe is the way alot of instructors teach and the way I have always been taught on previous sessions. Tim taught me a different line into both bends and also through rocket and I have to say I struggled getting used to it but when I pulled it off I was really catching the cars in front. The line through rocket was much much quicker.
I am going to have to spend more time learning how to get it right but I think I’ll try and get some more time with Tim soon.
