HID kit - anyone fitted one?

Looking at fitting HID’s on my cars was wondering if anyone had them or even if it possible ?

I’ve fitted HID for the main and dipped beams. It was among the first mods I made to the car.

I thought about these, but a few things put me off:

  1. Cost. (I know, I’m a pikey )
  2. I’ve heard they tend to interfere with the radio reception.
  3. Not so easy to get replacements in a hurry when the bulbs blow.
  4. I fitted the official Lotus upgrade bulbs and they’re actually pretty good. Especially since I adjusted the lamps slightly upwards.

Not that anyone would probably do anything but…

isn’t it illegal to have HID’s unless they are self leveling ??

My local dealer, Nick Whale Sportscars. Any Lotus dealer should be able to supply them.

I think they’re Osram bulbs.

It is only a legal requirement for them to be self levelling / cleaning if they are fitted by manufacturers.

If you check out my photos in thelink above I posted, you will see the difference. Not possible to get that with just bulbs.

Hi Brendan,

Just spoke with Bell & Colvill who don’t know about them. They said there isn’t such a kit and must be a non official part. Doesn’t mean it’s not an improvement so will try Nick Whale sports cars.

I definately recommend tweaking the headlamps upwards a little.

The law states the angle the lamps should be set at, but as they’re mounted very low on our cars it means they don’t project very far.

Mine might be slightly illegal, but they’re a massive improvement, and I don’t get people flashing me all the time so they can’t be too bad…

Other mods? That’s a bit vague

My best recent mod is the Volkswagen windscreen wiper controller relay. It reduces the number of sweeps when you do a wash-wipe so it doesn’t smear so much. It also cunningly adds variable intermitted wiper delay.

Where abouts is the relay located ?? fairly easy to change I take it ???

What is the part number? and how much are they? I did say I would never go back in my local VW dealer after my R32 but for a part for the Exige I could be tempted

If you’re a SELOC member, there’s a full write-up in their TECH WIKI

There seem to be a few variants on the part. I think the one I got is VW part no. 3B0955531. I paid about 30 notes for mine, but you should be able to source one much cheaper from a scrappy.
