Help!

Hi
I took the Exige for a run today and coming “enthusiastically” round the last roundabout before home, it coughed twice and then died. I restarted the engine, but as soon as I let the clutch out it died again. Tried various things like waiting a couple of mins with ignition off etc, engine would run and rev fine until I let the clutch out. Eventually after 15 mins or so I managed to get the car moving and then everything seemed fine until I tried to reverse back up the drive into the garage, when I encountered exactly the same problem.

Anyone got any ideas what I should check first?
Thanks
Alex

Loose wires rubbing / earthing on a moving engine / box perhaps ?

Give EVO a call and ask them what else they did!

Have you checked the speed sensor on the RH rear wheel hub? Take it off and give both ends of the plug connector a good clean… Worth a try.

Sounds like a loose electric connection somewhere to me, or as suggested above a chaffed wire.

Duff crank angle sensor is also a possibility.

Out of interest how much petrol is there in the tank?

Thanks guys, I think you were all correct!!
Just need to work out how to fix it!

And stop it happening again of course!

Check wheel weights, toe links, wheel bearing and hub nut

Thanks guys, I think you were all correct!!

Was there a prize ?

Prize is that smug feeling when you’re right!!

Not bad for a beginner!

That repair will not even touch that 3000 ‘contigency fund’!!!

Anyone know whether its possible to dismantle these plugs so that I can reattach the wires and if not what the best solution would be.
Failing that anyone know a good mobile auto sparky near to Basingstoke?
Cheers

Hi Alex,
I think it’ll be difficult to dismantle and make a good connection again. I had the same problem with a Air Temp sensor plug and managed to get all the correct fittings and wire from these guys, give them a ring very helpful and delivered within 48hrs.
Easy job, if you’ve got a set of crimps and a soldering iron.

Thanks Graham, only thing that concerns me is where this connector is sited would mean its going to get a fair bit of abuse - water, stones etc so would need to be pretty tough. But may have to use one of theirs and try and protect it somehow.

Fit an Emerald ECU + verniers - double bonus ie ditch the friggin sensor, & get much better/proper performance from ya VHPD

Thanks Pesky - slightly more than I’d budgeted for! but worth consideration.

I don’t think you actually need to do the vernier. That’ll save a bit.

True, but it’s daft not too, yes?

Well I considered it two seperate jobs, so have only done the ECU so far.
