C8UER the HANS route is a tough one it’s not cheap but could save your life like any safety kit I suppose, there are quite a few helmets that are HANS ready and can have the posts fitted as and when required, I can see why it’s compulsory in a lot of race series now but track days are a bit different, it depends on you as well if you like to drive at 10/10ths all the time then you’re more likely to have a big off at some point and HANS is then a good idea the is yours
My advise would be not to use a website. Go & try a few on as comfort, fit, weight etc does vary alot & you need to find the one that’s ‘right’ for you. HANs probably won’t be of use if your car has an airbag?
You could try these people. They seem to be cheap enough, yet good enough to have MSA/FIA approval to the current standards. HEDTEC Helmets
That said, I would support the view that it is worth trying a helmet on as a good fit is essential. I would also remind our younger viewers of historic Bell Helmet advertising which said "if you have a 10 head then buy a 10 helmet… "
I bought my 1st helmet via the web (not knowing any better) and had to adopt a slouch in the drivers seat to stop it banging the roof lining and giving myself double vision.
After a track day at bumpy Castle Coomb with my uncomfortable sitting position, I had back pain for about 6 weeks.
Enough was enough, so Karen & I went to GPR at Silverstone and tried every helmet they had. We even tried a pretty unscientific experiment of measuring my overall height with each helmet on, against a door frame to find the one with the shallowest top. It worked a treat and even in the S1, with what I think is a lower roof lining, I have no problems.

Completely agree - stick to one of the leading brands - Sparco, Bell, OMP etc. Could save your life.
I have an ‘open face’ helmet at the moment, but am thinking very seriously about getting a full face having heard stories about broken glass, rocks and fire attacking your unprotected chin etc!.
IMHO, HANS should be compulsory even on track days. I have already posted on another thread about this and think it would be the best money ever spent. The old human neck is really not very strong at all… even mine which grew over 1 inch during my time flying high ‘G’ aircraft! It does not take much of a stretch to do some serious spinal cord damage…
Funny how ‘we’ all find the money to make our cars ‘go faster’ yet strugggle to find the money to protect ourselves better in our now faster cars!!!
Actually, I can see my Christmas present (from ALL the family!) all sorted now! And it’s NOT posing either.
I think an open face helmet would be a mistake - as soon as you buy one you will inevitably be offered a ride in a Radical/Westfield etc with no screen and you will have to hunt around for a different skid-lid.

Made by the guy who used to be involved with Simpson helmets.
Look quite good -tried one on at DT’s a whle back.
Its a very difficult question to answer - how much do you value your head? (Answers on a postcard!) I remember the guy from Snell talking to me when I started racing about 10 years ago saying 'if you have a 10 head, wear a 10 helmet.
Having said that, in a closed cockpit car you are far less likely to have and debris etc hitting you. IMO.
When we have customer drivers we always make sure that they provide their own helmet (obviously fully explaining safety standards etc), partly because its a very subjective thing (some brands simply don’t fit some people) and partly because we want to protect ourselves legally.
What seats and harnesses would we have to get to be able to use Hans? Any potential group buys for the whole package? would this be the same for S1 and S2 Exiges?
If someone could explain why some harnesses won’t work with a HANS device I would greatly appreciate it?! All the harnesses I have used work (and never bought a ‘HANS Compatible’ one that I know of).
Is it the case that some are ‘HANS Approved’ but in actual fact it makes no difference at all?
