Help - I'm on two pots'

Hi Guys - I’m tearing my hair out.

Car has been off road now since Anglesey last May!!!

DVA has done a lovely job of rebuilding my tired K.

I have spent a fortune in time and cash (surprised shes not left me etc…) powder coating everything and replacing fasteners with stainless).

Done about 170 running in miles on a temporary map while I get to my booked slot at Emerald.

It was bogging down a bit in 2nd but didnt make it undrivable. I was out again last week and it went ont 2 pots near home. I limped home gently and went straight to the coil when I got the lid up. The coil pack had split open on one side and squirted black ‘silly string’ out of the split. Ok no great prob they dont last forever and do short out.

This explained why it went onto two pots as one side had failed and possibly why it was breaking down in 2nd…

…or so I thought. Borrowed another coil from Simon E (what a top chap  even washed and polished the car before starting it as I was so confident that would be the cure.

Nope - starts reluctantly and will idle although rough. As soon as there is any load it bogs down again and will not rev through it. So I put a new set of plugs in (exising ones were spanking new). Still the same. Must be leads… Nope tried the ones on the coil from Simon and still the same.

Sounds electrical?

Reflashed the emerald with another copy of the map i am using…still no change.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I have another coil arriving tomorrow to double check.

Off back in the garage now to get the undertrays off and scratch my head some more.

Going to take the earth strap off and cleanup the ends but its a last resort.

Cheers

Si

Simon

Check the wiring to the ECU as it passes through the bulkhead - in my VHPD days, it became chaffed & caused intermiitent shorting, which in turn burnt out a coil pack exactly as you describe. Also caused the ECU to “detect” a misfire, triggering the 5500rpm limp home rev limit.

Good luck.

PS Unfortunately I can’t get to the Buckles on Tuesday :frowning:

Cheers matey will do.

Uncle P u are a god amongst men!

Twas almost exactly as described. Despite my best attempts to protect everything
the loom was rubbing on the recirc pump and shorting one of the LT wires to the coil.

Nice one i owe u a drink.

Also massive thanks again to Simon E provided another coil so i could get to the NYLOC Martin House visit tday

cheers

Si
