Help - Engine Blown Up!

Driving along yesterday got to 5000 revs in fourth & the engine blew! Loud bang from the engine bay followed by clunking / rattling noise whilst I slowed down & stopped.

All engine oil gone & all coolant gone. The oil seems to have gone through the bottom half of the engine (seems to be below the air filter housing). I’m guessing that the head gasket is above the line of the air filter housing - can anyone tell me for sure?

The car was serviced 2 weeks ago & was round Donington last week end

It’s now very poorly in the garage!

Any ideas guys?

Did they change cam belt at the service by any chance ?

Sounds to me as of a rod has gone through the side of the block.

Dave

A service - no cam belt change - think it might be the con rod though!
Engine rebuilt 10 000 miles ago though???

Horizon Motorsport picking up car tomorrow…

Fingers crossed on the extent of the damage & repairability!

Dave - you were right - con rod thru the block in 2 places!

ouch…

Mark

Blast, that’s a bummer, it gives me no satisfaction whatsoever to be right on occassions like this.

It’ll be pricey. I have a number of good secondhand cranks and rod sets here plus a block or two.

Dave

Hi, Dave - Horizon Motorsport are doing the lot for me, thanks, mate.

4500 ish at the moment…

Mark

who rebuilt the engine for you?

The engine was rebuilt 10k ago by a Lotus dealership in Glasgow!

This time it’s with Horizin Motorsport in Birmingham.

Mark

there isnt a lotus dealership in glasgow… whats the garage name?

Not got the paperwork mate - it’s in the car.

Should get it back end of this week so will post the name then…
