Helmets??

Hi

need a bit of advice, don’t have a Helmet yet but need one for track days. Don’t want to spend a lot of money to be honest. where shall i go, there is loads of bikeshops up my way, shall i try there. Open face or full??? i know noithing

There is a few stig type ones on ebay are they any good, or will i just look stupid??

Nath, its best to try a few on
different makes have different shapes ok for some and not for others, best to get a proper car helmet if you’re not going to use it for a bike, different design for different application

Thanks MADDOG

I will keep away from bike helmets, you got any ideas where i my find one then, supliers etc? Any one in the north know of a good place??? Pesky???
thanks

I tried a load of helmets on the Autosport show and made my choice, there aren’t many places that sell car helmets, don’t know of any places up north

Nath

I reckon you’ll be okay with a good quality bike helmet in the Exige (no vat to pay either!).

I’ve got an “open face” bike helmet (but with a deep moveable visor - useful if pax in an open top car), cos you get more cooling!

It’s worth spending as much as you can afford on a good quality & lightweight (eg kevlar) helmet.(You should be able to find a suitable one in the 150 to 250 range, although you can pay 500 plus for top of the range!).

As Maddog says, you’ll need to try a few on to get the right fit, & a reputable bike shop will give you good advise.

Thanks guys, will do some research and will let you know what I find up here!

Nathan

Nath,

Take a trip along the scotswood road. I bought an open face bike helmet from Hein Gr…?? a specialist in bike accessories. Amazing choice & price range. Bought mine with a peak (no visor), works great in open & closed cars.

Tim.

Thanks for that, I know of the only bike shop on scotswood road and that is the yammhar shop? is this the one? the main area for bikes shops(20 in a line) is Westgate road??? could this it???

Right I’m no expert… but I think that any Gold standard/ACU approved helmet which is designed to protect bikers as they bounce down the road is going to be at least as adequate as motorsport/in car helmet from an impact point of view.

I personally bought a Nitro N600-V a few years ago now and I’m really happy with it, plus the price was very reasonable at around 70 I think - a great price.

I agree totally with comments already made that the most important thing (aside from a gold ACU badge or equivalent) is the fitting of the helmet… so you have to travel to try them on, ordering online etc is not so easy.

More expensive helmets tend to be lighter in construction, but then unlike riding a bike you have a headrest to help support that weight, plus I always wear a neck brace (not the one shown in my case) as I personally recall one horror story of the weight of the helmet in a (car-racing) head-on impact breaking one guys neck.

Finally (you probably know this) look after your helmet… if you drop it seriously consider getting a newun.

Oh lastly… since I’ve not posted since, I was sad to miss Donington but unfortunately knackered my clutch just a couple of days beforehand at Brands-Hatch, there was one other Exige there though… anyone here?

Not 100% true as they are designed for different things. TBH, I’m sure it won’t matter a helluva lot, but a bike helmet is designed for a big impact and then abrasion as it skids along the tarmac. A car one is different, as your head would tend to impact on something with a more focused point of impact (like a cage bar) and maybe then bounce off it another couple of times (say, if the car rolled). The foam in a bike helmet would do all of it’s absorbing in the first hit.

I want one of these!

Sorry Nath I was being a bit of a plonker there I did mean Westgate Rd…where all those biker types meet up at the weekend (& show off ).

Negative.

With Snell - auto lids get an additional anvil, narrower angle of view, and firesproofing. This is a common misonception. Aside from that, the testing is the same.

Yep… the only real difference I thought of that car helmets may have was increased fire-retardency, but then competitive drivers still wear a nomex balaclava under your helmet anyhow.

is that you Shug ??

is that you Shug ??

Nope - 'tis my evil twin (oh, with a working engine now, too )

Well, ref the helmets - I’d heard this from several avenues, but if you’ve got the testing criteria in front of you, I can’t argue!
