I’m just wondering your thoughts on the following: i’m possibly thinking of selling my pristine low mileage Exige S1 to fund my Helicopter Pilots Licence.
However having just had it completely overhauled, serviced, taxed and MOT’d by my main dealer they suggest I should try and keep it and find the funds some other way as it is the best one they have ever seen, even Lotus themselves at Hethel having seen my S1 say that they haven’t seen a better one and that I should try to keep it.
Just one question, do you think S1 prices will continue to be strong in coming years, is it something I should really be trying to keep a hold of…I see there’s one on Pistonheads at the minute for 24,000 with twice the mileage of mine and only half of the upgrades?
I’m taking it down to Donnington this weekend for the BTCC for a photo shoot, I will post some pictures when I get them.
I’ve no doubt that yours will appreciate over the medium to long term (define that as you may!) - how much over & above inflation, who knows? Like all “commodities” the value of Classic Cars may go up in value, as well as down, as has been shown over the last 20 years - however, I personally believe that the S1 Exige will be highly collectible in the future.
As to the value of your car now - depends on the buyer to be honest, & what they intend to use it for, but realistically it will be somewhere between 22K & 25K in my opinion.
I agree about it being highly collectable in years to come, there cannot be many with the spec, condition, mileage, history, and paperwork like mine!
As regards price, if I were to sell it I would expect my car to sell at the top end of your estimate bearing in mind the full spares/motorsport package that comes with it (not to mention all of those brochures)!!!
Looking at Pistonheads it does seem that good unmolested S1s are going for strong money.

So would I, mate.
If you do sell it, I’ll be sad to hear it, but I’m sure you (& Tim!!!) will only let it go to the “right sort” of home
PS Just dashing out - Mrs Pesky seems to think it’s time she changed her car… I wonder why?
Have you taken it to Hethel Jules, or were Lotus referring to my visit?
Nick Adams recond it had a better than most chassis, so just get out & drive it
Polish it when you get back, dont forget
Hi Tim,
I sent some pictures and a list of the full spec down to them as they were keen to see it and it was the general consensus was that it coudn’t really be bettered when taking into account the full package: mileage, condition, spec, history, paperwork, spares etc and said that it undoubtedly WILL appreciate in years to come and become a true collectors item.
I even bumped into Glenn and he said he is very tempted to buy it back.
Meeting Steve at the BTCC this weekend, fancy popping down?
If you sell it and buy a helicopter, is there a www.helicopters.com forum where you can post links to “copterheads” used s2 helicopters adverts, whilst everyone else is out flying theirs?
The term “Polishing your chopper” is a lot funnier than polishing an exige though

Prices of nice s1’s have definately risen over the last 12 months but i think you would be lucky to get more than 22k at the moment…if it was orange though you could name your price
I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer for prices to drop before I bought mine… seems they’ve well and truly bottomed out!
Mine should be about as tidy as they come once I’m done (although will never be a “show car” as I like using it too much!) but don’t see why some won’t be making mid-twenties in the next couple of years as their classic value grows.

If you were to see this one i’m sure you’d realise it’s worth more… the spec, mileage, condition, history, paperwork and spares package is second to none…Lotus themselves suggest I should market it at close to 25K.

Why keep asking people what it’s worth? It’s worth what the buyer is willing to pay. I doubt it will go any lower in price but luxury items may feature less on people’s radar in the current economic climate.

I’d keep it, and drive the frickin’ thing!
No where have I ever asked how much my car is worth, I KNOW how much it is currently worth, the purpose of the thread was as to whether it is generally thought that S1 Exige prices will remain strong in future years or whether it is thought they have reached their limit!
Anyway thanks to Pesky, Nath, and the others i’ve spoken to either by phone or by PM…your advice has been greatly appreciated!
Steve, see you at Donny this weekend!
P.S. My predicament is whether to sell it now to further my career or keep it!

Good luck what ever you decide to do Jules. The car is stunning and certainly the best I have seen. Personally I would keep it, but some times you have to do some thing different. If the car was yellow, orange, blue, I would have already bought it and you would have no time wasters messing you about!
