has anyone seen my oil cap?

my oil caps gone walkies
problem is when i do it up tight i cant take it off when the engines warmed up -it gets bloody hot as well
did it up finger tight (just as it started to bite) went for a run and now its gone!
how tight should they be and how can i add oil after its been warmed up as lotus states if i then cant take the cap off ?

Its (was) an alloy one right ?

yes … but unlike my cat i forgot to put a name tag on it!

Typical, aftermarket oil caps always fall off.
The original, although ugly and yellow is the best one by far.
Light and never backs off.
If anything it seems to tighten on itself

Yep - Alloy ones appear to undo themselves - the Nylon yellow one never falls off …

I do my standard yello one up finger tight and always need a bleedin’ hammer to get it off…

BTW… why would you top-up when hot anyway?

At a trackday some times I have little choice if it’s worked its way down too low.

My alloy one disappeared rather quickly at my first trackday. Although it is worth looking down the back of the manifold, it sat down there for a while!

For trackdays, I always swap over to the original yellow plastic monstrosity from the alloy jobbie normally found on my engine!

It is always a good idea to check the oil level a couple of times during a trackday, and [color:“red”]ALWAYS[/color] at the end of the event. It is not unusual to use 1/4 to 1/2 litre of oil on a trackday!

I don’t seem to have that problem losing oil…

I swear that when you use the dipstick you wake up the oil gremlins…

I didn’t mean to imply it’s being “lost”, but the VHPD does tend to use/burn oil when it’s given some stick on a trackday.

Still, what do you expect from a rattly old diesel engine

Always keep an eye on it… but never actually topped up while hot… although I suppose its not like your pouring stone cold oil into a super hot camshaft… I guess you would let it cool a bit first anyhows??

mike… I reckon thats a symptom of keeping the revs away from 7k+. I find I use less oil the more I stay away from high revs. I’d profer more oil is used by those using more revs

But that’s where all the power is - honestly, I ask you!

Ah…

But just yesterday I was messing around with my Emerald (you know how it is with MOTs) and I happened to catch the maximum revs recording - 8,169 - whoops !!

I must confess that I tend to take the car up to 8,000 at every opportunity when on track or sprinting…

The low oil consumption is a bit of a mystery, therefore

I now have a DL90 datalogger, so will be able to analyse things in more detail, once I get it to work…
