I’ve had a very early (non hd) gopro camera for a few years and whilst I’ve always found the picture to be ok , the sound is dire…full of distortion on both high and low mic settings.
Does anyone use any of the later gopro models? and is the sound decent quality on these ?
I’ve just bought a road hawk from dogcamsports. I found them really helpful. They sell GoPro too and would give you an opinion, albeit slightly biased to their products.
I’ve got the Hero 2 motorsport pack one and bought a harness bar clamp to go with it. The main sound quality difference for me depends which case back cover I put on, either open or closed. When mounted on the outside of the car I get wind noise and when it’s on the harness bar all I hear is the supercharger. I’d be interested to hear if we can make them any better…
Picture quality however is fantastic in hd
I’ve heard of people using external microphones to good effect? Something I’m thinking of doing as the wind noise I get with my GoPro1 is annoying
Suppose I should just shut my cars noise up !
I bought a GoPro HD Hero 2 last year with the motorsport mount kit. I’ve used it quite a few times most recently at Curborough and last September when we went to France. As Chalkey mentioned the sound quality does vary depending on whether you use the open or waterproof case. Here’s a bit of footage I’ve recorded:

Some nice camera angles there ! Which mount were you using?
Just ordered the gopro hero 3 silver.
229 quid from Amazon with the option of using an external mic.
My early GoPro came with two different covers and part of the manual explains which you should use for in car footage (and specifically refers to sound quality). Do you still have your manual and a spare cover?
Yes I have both original manuals but mine came with only one waterproof cover…
I’ve since read that if you take out the white rubber o ring from the case door that helps a bit with letting some but not all sound through to the mic.
All a bit immaterial now tho cos I’ve splashed out on the Hero 3 …
Ive heard glowing reports on the sound quality
I’ve put my old one up for sale on preloved. com at 65 quid.
So now I have a new gopro !
My old one output AVI files which I could edit easily with windows movie maker , , however, the new one outputs MP 4 files which movie maker can’t open.
Any good / easy editing software suggestions please ?
Download the free editing software from the gopro site. It’s very good and allows for correction and export in other formats.
Cool …
Will try that …
Gotta edit out the slower bits of my driving. . That’ll be 90% of it !
I also like WMM for its ability to quickly edit scenes/movies, so rather than use another video editor I simply convert MP4s over to AVI then edit them in WMM as before. Doesn’t quite answer your question but may be a useful workaround for you?
Most were done using the motorsport mount. I use iMovie for editing them together, quick and simple!
Just bought one of those… seems very good quality.
I gather then that TD organisers are ‘happy’ to have this kind of external mounting on the car???
It seems to be a suction mount? (My Garmin GPS suction mount is always falling off my inside window!!!)

Is that with the open back on the case? Lots of wind noise.
I'm just curious, as I filmed this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZzOejvnrYM with the closed back. There's little wind noise, but unfortunately also hardly any engine noise. I was thinking of using the open back next time, but not if it causes that much wind noise :(
