I looked at this along with @Fonzey
Short answer is depends. Some tapes allow heat out but reflect heat coming in.
It’s also a PITA to apply neatly
I have said tape on the side in my garage rather than on the car.
As Andy says, best way to think of it is as reflection rather than insulation.
Good if you have something in line of sight of an exhaust manifold or turbo or something. Pretty marginal for anything else.
I think underside of heat shield can’t hurt, in theory reflect any radiated heat back down but it isn’t likely to help much in a “heatsoak when stationary” type thing.
It’s fairly inexpensive compared to other measures, but just expect very fractional improvements… If any.
I have it on underside of the 2-Eleven “would-be-boot” floor as my charge cooler sits right above the back box. Also plan to fit to the outside of Caterham pedalbox because it’s a few inches from the exhaust manifold.
Cheers Fonzy.
Was just a thought to limit heat soak on the IC.
