All, just had some Alpinestars delivered. I did the standard measurements around the hand (excl the thumb) and on that basis ordered medium. The gloves fit, but are absolutely snug (bordering on tight fit)and my hand is in the semi-fist (half-open) position when relaxed.
Having never worn race gloves before, I’m not sure whether I need to go a size up??? Is this the way FIA nomex gloves are, or should I go for large which will be a bit looser?

I had to go a size up from what I expected with my Alpinestars gloves. Their gloves are designed pre-curved so they should fit best when your hand is gripping the steering wheel etc but start to pull taught across the palm when you flatten your hand out. Like you mention this means when relaxed your hand is held half closed.
I guess only you can decide what you consider too tight or not but to give you some idea, I could easily wear and use the size below mine but they were noticeably tight.
What he said. I like things loose and baggy, so I went a size up with my Sparco’s

I have had the same experience, my old Alpinestars where a size smaller than my new Sparcos
