This may be a bit of an obvious one to those of you that frequent trackdays but how do I go about getting some driver training? I’ve got a very capable car now but I’m lacking any real ability, often the case I suspect
I’m pretty close to Brands Hatch so as far as which track goes that would be my first choice. Do I get in on a trackday first then get an instructor or get in touch with someone and then book a track day?
Ideally it wouldnt be a Lotus only day as I have friends with TVR’s, MX5’s etc and being able to share the instructor would be good. I could be off practicing while someone else has a go.
Would you recommend anyone, ideas on pricing, anything really.
Yep I use JP, he’s based mainly at Silverstone but I’ve used him at Donny and Brands too…he will meet you further a field. He’s a Top Top man, even if he is from Wolverhampton
I like you prefer half day and to share so as you can go practise what you’ve been taught, he’s ok with this. I’ll PM his number.
Try Jo and Colin Hoad at CAT Driver Training. They run courses at Millbrook. Did a SELOC club day and then one on one training with him. He also does training at tracks.
All are good, just some are better, I reckon I made more time with Mike than anyone else, but I have gained more confidence with training at other tracks with different instructors. My biggest issue now I’m told is confidence, I keep saying my biggest issue is Mr P
I hear many positive feedbacks on Mr Wild, and I hope to try him out one day next year.
I use Malcolm Edeson who regularly instructs on the LOT days. He can be contaacted on the LOT forum under “Maxx”. I’ve used him over half a dozen days (some days sharing with ET drivers) in the past year or so and I personally find him very easy to communicate with i.e. he gives clear but simple (like me!) and concise feedbacks which I like. I wished I took instructions much earlier than drive around aimlessly for 2 years like I did (which was fun, but I wasn’t getting any better or faster).
Andy Walsh “Walshy” runs Carlimits days at North Weald Airfield (not too far from you) - very good instruction from one of the top Elise championship drivers and very good value - LOT sell them for 25 ish - other “sports cars” are usually welcome.
I’ve read good things about Walshy and as much as I dont doubt his tutoring skill I’ve never really fancied the airfield days. When I’ve watched them on youtube etc it allways looks odd trying to string together any number of turns due to looking across an expanse of concrete and traffic cones.
I think I would rather get on a classic track and Brands Hatch is only about 20 mins from me, if only we could drag Walshy there
Dont underestime what you can learn on an airfield from a top instructor, get the DVD too before you do it. I suggest the 4 driver days rather than the activity days.
For training, Ollie Hancock, F2 driver, just took the Evora to a GT4 win in it’s first outing. Google his website. I’ve used him perhaps 6 times. Nothing good is cheap.
Dont get me wrong, certainly not knocking what you may learn on the airfield days, not in the slightest. I just dont think I would enjoy one as much as a track is all. At the end of the day its only about enjoyment for me, never going to go beyond the odd trackday here and there.
The dvd does sound interesting tho, worth a look methinks.
