Gears

Started getting an odd thing.

Upon accelerating out of first occasionally I can not move the gear shift at all out of first. It feels locked solid. Normally as the car slows it comes free.

When I was at Back on track and we removed the undertray the cable was a bit pinched which as I understand from Jez the undertray on the Cup 260 will do this due to a dubious design. Our solution was to use some wire and move it just slightly out the way of the undertray. Equally we spaced out the undertray to stop any further issues.

My question I guess is has anyone experienced this ‘locked gear’ thing before?

Thanks in advance.

Only time I have heard of something similar, is corrosion on the gearbox input shaft/clutch splines holding the clutch centre plate against the flywheel when pedal depressed.

Bit extreme to find out it isn’t that though!!

Hmmm. I mean every other gear shift is perfect. Its so intermittent that I can’t work it out. The gear cables if caught on something may force a stiff change but not a complete stuck stick.

I had this on my last Exige, 240 pp, which was still under warranty at the time. It happened at the same time i was getting warranty work on the third gear syncro so they just replaced the whole clutch assembly. Never happened again.

That was my car John speaks of, I had exactly the same symptoms and it was indeed a new clutch required :frowning:

You might be able to remove the box and lubricate, but if the box is out you may as well put in the new clutch, not sure why there is an issue here, I blamed on my car just really being a track car, so heat being the culprit.

It does surprise me. The car has done 18k, the previous owner had done a few trips to the ring and I have used it on track. But it is a track car so god sake you would have thought…it does have an uprated clutch as all 260s do.

Well, I will see what happens I guess. IT just seems strange that up until 3 weeks ago it never did it and now after having tweaked the cable positions this happens hence why I thought that it might be connected.

CT

mine just all of a sudden one morning did it, scared the crap out of me, thought I broken my gearbox!

One of my 3 clutches did this…
turned out to be the driven plate disintegrating!
Couldn’t disengage the clutch for a while.

My bite point is about 3/4 of the way up, except on Thursdays and other odd times when its just off the floor. Makes for interesting traffic driving not knowing if the clutch will engage high or low.

Well it hasn’t happened for a while now. It may sound silly but having changed my driving style in so far as accelerating higher in the rev range before going to second seems to make the difference. This car really needs to be driven on the raggedy edge…

Absolutely
