Gearboxes

If you stay NA just leave it alone and enjoy since there is nothing to be gained by wasting money on a sequential box… If you make up 1.5 sec a lap on a track day is it worth 10k ?

yeah 10k of driver training would net you more

Hell $5K of supercharger and $5K of E153 is the thing to do…
You guys might give Woodsport a call on a E153 setup.
I’m not sure if they do it yet but they do know their way around Toyota products…

Is it called an E153 because you can do 153mph in first gear???

ha nice

And with that setup you will be the slowest SC exige on the track, sorry Frank but on this topic you are not right, if you are running the HP and torque you are then maybe the taller gearing is ok, but with the HP we are running it just doesn’t workout for a track car, 350hp track car needs a close ratio box and the vmax of the car does not need to be much higher that the fastest you can get on the longest straight. In reality if I could have stood the noise I should have got the Jubu final drive kit as well to make the ratios closer, but I drive my car to track and my ears almost bleed already…

I always have a laugh when I read this crap from guys that have no first hand knowledge…

The fastest you can go in the straights is only determined by the power and how good your brakes are, unless you play in parking lots…

You are now telling me that you are done with a quest for more power and faster lap times ?

Sorry Frank I agree with Ade, optimised gearing will make any car go faster, the end.

As long as we can pull 168 on the A55 that’s all we need in the UK

You mean optomised gearing for a low powered car right ?
Now turn up the wick and you’ll need better gearing to take advantage of it…

I guess if you have no wick then you’re just wanting to be as fast as the other guy all day long…

Each shift is .5-.7sec of no wheel torque… As I said you need power to go fast

thing is not everyone has the pockets for 300+ motors

You’ve gotta agree frank rocket pig is a labour of love and it’s operating on different tarmac with a shit load more power

Frank is right … gearchanges take time…
I’m fitting an electric motor

Even with all the power Frank has, I woud still want gear ratios that work, I would probably have an audi gearbox built to take the power and have 6 gears
On the other hand I would just have fitted the audi engine as well

CVT is the answer.

From Wiki “CVTs were banned from Formula 1 in 1994 due to concerns that the best-funded teams would dominate if they managed to create a viable F1 CVT transmission.”

See more HERE

There was a company that did a CVT for the rotax go-karts a couple of years ago. How successful it was I dont know, it was bloody expensive mind at about a grand. Looked very interesting non the less

The Quaife sequential for the 2zz is a waste of money, those I know that have had them fitted have had nothing but trouble with them and have taken them back out again… Last I heard they were trying to get their money back.

I haven’t heard anything about the Jubu sequential, there cant be many out there if any at all, which probably means it’s is also a load of rubbish… I may be wrong and it may be the best thing next to sliced bread but I’m sure we would have heard about it by now.

As for the sequential geary is developing, word on the grapevine Is that they are great on the Honda cars but don’t work on the Toyota cars so well (I had to laugh when I was told it was to do with drive shaft angles…). How true that all is?? Time will tell on that one I suppose.

Hi Gav - how’s your 15K gearbox ???

I’m still tempted by the ‘proper’ option - epic !!!

Thanks for a nearer to first hand view than the Lotus Talk feedback I’ve gleened. Certainly the few Quaife’s I’ve read about don’t mention troubles, but after spending that much i suppose not many will be quick to boast about their mistakes.
The Jubu seems to be a year old and is shown on their website

I believe Geary is out in Australia testing his now so I would hazard a guess it’s too early to make definative comments on how well it’s working.
Next couple of months should be interesting.

My biggest fear of spending money on the likes of the JUBU and EP sequential would be the back up service and parts you would get in a few years time.

Neither of them are g/box manufacturers, it is very much a project for them of their own designs. Great in the first instance when they making the first 10 and promoting them but there will be a finite amount of people wanting to buy them.

There will come a time when the cost and hassle of making and maintaining them will out way the sales they have and they will pretty much become redundant units over night…

There is no cheap way to a sequential box, if you’ve got your heart set on one then just bite the bullet and spend the money on what is proven kit and what will still be available for parts and servicing in a couple of years time.

Exactly the reasons why I have taken on the Hewland dogbox project Gav!!!
Not sequential but a good gear kit made for the C64 casings by a ‘proper’ gear box manufacturer.
One now fitted into my car and when the car is a runner serious testing will begin.
Second gearkit on its way to Sector 111.
They had a Jubu dogbox and broke the mainshaft in half on the first test day…
Shinoo was here last week and I showed him the Hewland gear kit and he commented on how strong it looks in comparison.
Obviously it will not be a good road car solution as it will be noisey etc etc etc
Will be you updated on progress.
