Gearbox

Whilst the engine is out, thinking of getting a CR gearbox dumped in. Is there any benefit over the one already in it?

If u want i have some some parts of a quaife UCR gearkit. Then u can buy the remaining parts from quaife and fit an UCR.Very low mileage.e-mail me if interested. On my car i have the UCR and would never use the standard one (CR) anymore.Nicolas

of course…staight cut… [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image]it depends on what u want, my Exige is my 2nd car.

The Lotus UCR gear set is semi-helical, and thus quieter than a straight cut set, but a little bit noisier than the standard set. You don’t really notice the extra noise on most roads, but on a motorway it’s a little bit wearing. Motorways are for poofs anyway, so it doesn’t bother me.The lower gearing really does make a big difference to driving the car, it makes the car feel much faster because you can really keep it right in the power band, and when you’re going for it, you get through the gears really quickly. With the standard box you barely use 4th and 5th, but the UCR set makes them more more useful.

If you want an UCR to get better acceleration, I’d spend that on uprating your engine for better acceleration. That way your top speed doesn’t get reduced to something daft.

Granted, the top end wil be recuced, but I really don’t do anything much above 100 in the car cross country anyway, thus not losing much.Should be a laugh! Would of liked to have gone for a sequential, but the ’s just too much.

It limits the car to something like 137mph, which is more than you’re likely to get out of a standard car.The real reason to choose the UCR set is to make the car FEEL faster without affecting reliability. I doubt you can make the car feel as fast by spending a couple of grand on the engine without risking it blowing up.What am I talking about? As if the engine is reliable as standard [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/frown.gif[/image]

No makey sense [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image]Not forgetting you lose time/speed with each gear change which could offset some of the gains with shorter gearing.[This message has been edited by Admin5 (edited 20 March 2003).]

I guessed it holds higher revs better? No? Didn’t take into account that the gearing would mean more changes I guess.

i just say: try one with UCR…Of course if u have 240+ hp and u r interested in high speeds it does not make sense…

The parts are being ordered from Quaife, but are not the straight cut ones. Would be too noisey for road use and a semi daily driver.
