Gearbox Question

Looks like my gearbox has given up on me yesterday while on track. :imp:

Been trying to research via the usual places.

I have found a new Corolla C60 gearbox for sale at a good price. I have managed to find out that the C60 has a longer 6th compared to the C64. (might actually be beneficial on motorway runs). But the Corolla box has the selectors at the rear of the box instead of at the front.

Is it possible to swap just the middle casing with the correct orientation selector? Or maybe just use all the internals from the new box and fit into my existing one? (assuming the casing on mine is OK internally)

Also while i am at it, any recommendations on clutch’s and are lightened flywheel’s really worth it?

I’m really sorry to hear that Alan, was that at Blyton?

Not sure a clutch change mod or lighter flywheel is totally necessary if I’m honest, in hindsight of course. I maybe inclined if I’d of given the previous clutch a bit of hammer then replace at the same time.

What’s up with the box?

Std clutch has done me more justice than so called uprated ones … and I’ve had a few !

Yes Jonny, happened at Blyton.

Just managed to get it a fastened down on the trailer when the rain started to come down. So at least i got the most out of the day.

I will be fitting a new clutch while the box is out. Be silly not to really. Good to here that a standard one is up to the job.

Don’t know what has actually gone in the box just yet, but its not good.

Happy New Year all.

I used a C60 box from a Celica when my original box 3rd gear let go. It was just a straight fit with no need for messing with the selector.

Couple of hundred quid will buy you a celica box and they don’t have a hard life in a fwd road car

What he said, just use a Celica box, get the Jubu gears inserted and put it in.
As for clutch, the does depend on HP, if your car started off as a 220hp car, you do need an uprated clutch, not so bad if you use a 240hp clutch. My 220hp clutch (which is a standard 190hp Celica one) spun out on the dyno!

I’d put in an uprated one.

Thanks for all the replies.

But the question is can a Corolla box be converted to be the same as the Celica or Exige by swapping the middle casings?

Yes i can pick up a unknown Celica box cheap. But i can also get a Corolla box that is brand new and never been used.

My car is NA running production spec on the engine.

if it is a C60 gearbox I don’t see why not, might need to try a Celica or Corolla forum to be sure

The Wikipedia page thinks the boxes are interchangeable as they are.

I have the long 6th in mine. Worthwhile for the motorway. I think it’s geared to 153 mph at 8500 in 5th (memory serves??) so unlikely to get out of 5th on track, only on the A55!

If my gearbox comes out for a rebuild, it will get the Jubu final drive and the taller 6th gear, just need to save up the size of a small mortgage to do it…

On my last rebuild I had the Celica 6th put in to compensate for the shorter final drive. Made a Hugh difference on the road and it’s rarely in 6th on track anyway. Kemmel (I wish) and Snetterton excluded.

My old Celica box used to drive me mad on track. 6th gear was way too long which didn’t suit the 2-eleven’s persona. Most track’s I’ve been on you’d only use up to 5th gear. Always seemed a waste for such a track biased car.

I’d only go with the Celica 6th with the Jubu 5.0 final drive. It brings ratio for 6th back to similar to standard.

Unfortunately it turns a £200 gearbox into a ££££££ gearbox. Nothing’s cheap when it comes to getting a Lotus how you want it!
