Well my gearbox (although the other potential culprits are noted thanks gents) is not well as discussed and should be remedied before my next scheduled outing (not until July as I’m away on biz). Whilst looking at this on saturday one of the other things that caught my eye and didn’t look quite right was engie mount/support on the gearbox end. Please see the pictures, is this a standard part and does it look like it has collapsed as I suspect.
Maybe this is responsible for the gear selection/loss of drive issue?
That looks like the standard gearbox mounting and I don’t think that it’s broken. Even if it was broken, you’d still have drive but the engine/gearbox would move around under and off load.
Really… ok thanks, it just looks like there is a lot of space above the mount for movement along the bolt (not the most precise technical description but you get the jist)
Sorry but I do think it looks wrong.
The full length of that bolt (below the head) should be inside a big rubber.
That rubber should have no play.
When I took off my engine I noticed the rubber had elongated, ovalized, but not by much so instead of changing the whole rubber I had a metal bush done to the bolt to effectively increase its diam.
But then I learnt this rubber is a fairly standard one so if it happened again I wouldn’t hesitate on changing it.
Don’t remember which car has it so it would take off the mount, open it (it’s made of two shells), take out the rubber and go with it to try and find something similar.
I agree that it doesn’t look right but you’ve put doubt in my mind now (and that judging it purely off my own car could just mean that my mount was also kippered) so I had a look back through SeanBs track prep thread and it seems to be the same:- Track prep thread

Looks OK to me to and I fitted a brand new one when I put my engine back in.
I do think that it is a shitty mount though. My Quaife box used to hit the chassis when I cornered until I fitted the Elise parts uprated engine side engine mount. I have done a bit of digging to find a replacement gearbox side mount, but didn’t find anything.
George the only uprated mount I know of is the Elise parts engine side mount.
I wondered if mine was fubared too as it looks like this. Just doesn’t seem right to have so much of the bolt standing proud, but as others have said, it looks “normal”.
Guys, I’m sure this is wrong. As someone said earlier, that bolt should be flush with the top of the mount. Underneath the black gearbox mount is a rubber bush with a hole in the centre which that bolts passes through. The rubber bush bolts to the underside of the gearbox mount, and the bolt passes through it into a chassis bracket. Is it possible that the bush has collapsed, and the bolt has corroded itself in place?

Sean…
I have to agree now as well. I just checked the pics I took when I removed mine and it’s very similar.
Probably a different top screw that made it look different but there should be a visible part of the bush. Why? don’t know.
But as I said, there was play between the rubber and the bush in mine, so I had a bigger bush made so it wouldn’t move.
But if the head of the bold was flush with the top of the mount, then where could the spacer be? The spacer goes between the head of the bold and the steel surround of the rubber so some movement is allowed, avoiding any metal to metal contact.
Sean, yes I know about this Elise Parts engine mount. Bernard also do a similar one. But, I was wondering if there is a motorsport supplier selling harder engine mount bushes. I know for example, Peugeot, Renault, Honda and many others sell this kind of kits for their usual rally/race cars. Is there something similar for the Rover cars?
