Yea , I suppose when you get old it takes time for aged eyes to refocus .

As mentioned you only really need to know when to stop should things be going pear shaped. Is it possible to have any of the gauges light a red light remotely? Could then just stick it in the line of sight, could even add a buzzer or klaxon 
SPA gauges allow for remote LEDs.
