Fuel Surge problem

On a recent trip to Spa noticed on the fast lefthander I got a fuel starvation problem for a few seconds if the tank was not full.

I have heard of this problem before but is there a cure ?

Thanks

Swirl pot, & secondary fuel pump will cure that. You really don’t want fuel starvation at any time, let alone at Pouhon! I’m sure that JSR will be able to sort you out

I got it at Brands (clearways)when the car was new and I was down to about 1/2 a bar on the guage.
A really bad idea all round.
Fitted proalloy baffled tank, not only does it fit an extra 9 litres in, it will go down to almost fumes and not surge.
(did i say it was lighter too?)

I’m sure your wallet would be lighter

How much ?

Might be better than the pump and swirl pot.

AAAAAHHHHH !!! - don’t fookin tell me that. Do I now need a new fooking fuel tank as well

666 inc vat and delivery :astonished:

Will have to start saving.

Replacing a fuel tank is a bugga of a job, timewise anyway - personally I would still be concerned about recurring fuel starvation, even if a baffled tank alone, was fitted to cure it.

It’s only four bolts on an S1.

With the engine in situ?

Pro alloy is the way to go

and it aint that hard a job !!!

Yep, it wasn’t as bad as I’d heard people say. Didn’t need to touch the engine. Not sure what it’s like in an S2. Cup holders might get in the way.

LOL @ Fluffy  Sorry, for some reason, I thought it was an engine out job. Presumably it can be done from underneath then?

Must agree though that fitting a larger capacity tank would be a damn good idea!

I only suffeered this problem once…at Oulton, and that was due to (very) low fuel.

Now i just keep an eye on track miles & the fuel gauge. Cheaper than a new tank

So how low is too low in a S2 ???

If I kept it over 1/3rd full would I be OK ???

As said, half a bar is too low, given how poor the gauge is.

I had mine fitted free by Lipscomb’s!
It was in having the 260ECU and they needed to drop the tank anyway to fit the fuel pump. “while you’re there boys?”
“Certainly Sir, gratis”

As a rough rule on mine - a 3rd of a tank on track turns to less than 1 bar if you park in the pits and let the guage sit / restart the engine. This is my refuel point and I haven’t had surge since my first track days before I worked this out…

Proalloy tank is the way to go, not hard to fit, drop off the under trays and sheer panel (needs the correct torque doing up) then 4 bolts the pump wiring and fuel hoses (not in that order however) just a bit fiddly and best done on a ramp

With original S1s now getting to be 10+ years old, how long is it reasonable for the tanks to last…not forever certainly?

New tank seems and expensive option for track day use, If racing, then fair enough.
Just make sure you have enough in your tank to last your session!
