Fuel Pump

Some advice please. Driving a standard S1 at the weekend. In a queue the idle became rough and stalled. Restarted fine and then 2 mins later rough idle and no response to throttle input and then it stalled. Engine would then not stop. Car was hot after a 2 hour motorway run. I could hear the pump priming. Giving several primes did not really make a difference. Let it cool for 10 mins and started OK, drove off and then after a min gradualy lost power and then died. Left for another 10 mins and when priming the pump now sounds different. Several atempts and then it fires up and runs OK at high revs and lumpy at low revs. When home I took the throttle off and it died.

Just done a fuel pressure check and all is OK, the engine idles OK so can not reproduce the problem.

Has any one got any ideas, dont realy want to take the tank out without cause.

thanks

Kevin

Hello Kevin
Where to begin - firstly I am not in any way one of the more technically minded chaps on the forum and hopefully there will be someone else along with a list of things to try before looking too deeply at the potential of a fuel pump/tank issue but I can say about the similar experience I just had with my wife 111s.
Over a period of time the intermittent cutting out got worse - similar symptons to yours it sounds. My immediate suspicion was the fuel pump or tank but after reading what a pig it was to look at solving that problem, I decided to try all I could based on information garnered from various forums. ( given time I can have a search and point you in the right direction for info), but after attempting a number of different things, and the problem getting worse I bit the bullet and bought a new pump. When my local garage went to fit it they found that the fuel tank had large amounts of rust debris in it and this was clogging the pump ( apparently an occasional problem with the Lotus mild steel tank ). Although I wanted to fit one of the aftermarket aluminium motorsport tanks, my timescale (just before le mans ) and the lead time meant I fitted a Lotus original. Since then the car has run beautifully and I’m glad in the end I bit the bullet and got the pump. Apparently though there really could be a number of reasons for your problem ( bad earth and loose wiring uppermost ). I hope this helps a little and that you find that the problem is not fuel pump / tank related. Depending on what you find I will be more than happy give you the benefit of my searching and findings.
