If I take it to bits to blast and paint the wishbones will it all go back together without needing a geo?
I’m about to have ‘major earthworks’ infront of my garage so thought I might as well do it while its stranded

I reckon you should be OK mate as long as you make note of where all of the shims and spacers come from.
Sean…

Shims! you don’t need those anymore they just add more weight
thought so - sod it I’ll have a go.
Looks a shed as it is and will annoy me till I do it
The geo was done about 18 months ago, by the edwards, b4 I bought the car.

No.
If you take the suspension apart it will 100% need a geo (and TBH after 18months it probably needs one anyway).
When you remove the wishbones they will not go back together in exactly the same place, bolt holes, etc have a tolerance they aren’t a perfect fit, then there are the bushes which won’t sit in exactly the same place.
Remember the geo settings are in fractions of a millimetre so it doesn’t take much for them to be out.
fair doo’s
might as well get on with it anyway then
Would be interesting actually to see how much the geo does change when removing and refiting the wishbones and stuff. I have thought about this for next year, if I smash the side off the car in qualifying, how far will the geo be out after bolting on new wishbones and stuff??? As I guess I may not have time to re do all the geo before the race.
Obviously the rule of thumb here is not to smash the side of in the first place!!

I would think that is a good place to start…

So, you’re not racing this year after all - engine problem?
Only kidding

It would defently been interesting to know how much the geo would change… Personally I find it hard to belive it would change that much… And what does change… camber, caster, toe…???
Well, having spent the last 12 years working in the motor industry designing and developing suspension, I know from testing that it can change quite a bit. That’s why people design in adjustment. Everytime we test a car we reset the geo. Even if we only changed the dampers we would reset it.
The biggest changes will be to toe with camber second.

I wasn’t questioning you Mark. Fair play, you obviously know your stuff. I will take any info from a man who has actually done stuff and tested things and seen the results for himself. Its people that hear things thrid hand off someone they don’t know and take it to be gospel that annoy me. lol
If you say its toe that would move the most, then I guess at least that is pretty quick to adjust. Shimming the camber isn’t exactly the quickest thing to adjust on our cars.
Mark_A has already chipped in here so no need for my ‘lay’ opinion… but anyway, If you dismantle the wishbones and then get them painted etc… (in fact even if you don’t) i’d be amazed if the geo wasn’t out at least a wee bit.
If i think about it this way… I get the geo set and then don’t change anything but drive the car around for a year, then check it again… usually its out a wee bit but nothings bent or obviously moved, however its still needing reset… so surely if I take the wishbones off I can expect to need a geo ?
makes sense to me …
