Has anybody used the originl Pipercross backplate?. To do this the ITG filter retaining lugs must be removed and then the P/C captive nuts can be positioned to hold the airbox and filter, It should all then fit to the P/C backplate bolts? This should make future removal of airbox a bit easier.
I dont want to go chopping off the lugs to find wooooops
Ps I can see why Lotus opted for the air duct cone filter!!!
Will be interested to hear how you get on Clive!
The PTP words intimate that it is a straight forward job… I would imagine getting the whole thing installed withinh the Carbon airbox will be a game… and as you say you do want it to be easily removable/accessed!!!
Piccies of job as it progresses please!!
Is the ‘Wiches Hat’ still for sale!!!

Pix to follow. Too cold in garage today !!!
Wiches hat is spoken for but still waiting for confirmation…you get first refusal if other chap drops out.
Clive
you don’t hang about do you! Mine only arrived this lunchtime haven’t even unpacked it yet. I would be interested in pics too as I don’t understand from your description, perhaps it will be clearer when I actually take mine apart for the first time
Have a look at this.
1 is ITG filter inside airbox showing their fixing lugs.

2 is ITg backplate showing the position of their Dzus fittings ( these are almost impossible to access unless you are an octpus.

3 is original Pipercross backplate which I recon can be retained by removing the filter lugs (see pic 1) and replacing the Dzus with original bolts on original position.

This should hold everything together and make airbox removal as before.
Comments appreciated before I get busy with the Tin snips.
Certainly looks feasible are the original bolts long enough?
Alex
Hi Clive
How are you getting on with this? Did you cut the lugs off?
I’m going to try and fit mine Monday.
Cheers
Alex
Hi …Yes now fitted mine.
Lugs cut off …be careful not to contaminate the filter as the fine filings disappear into the foam and are blighters to remove .
Suggest you line inner of filter with cloth/paper and tape in place. Even then the bits get in and need vaccing out.
Drill the new holes oversize to allow for some assembly movement.
I used the 5th lug to locate the filter because you dont want it falling out of position when refitting the airbox.
Depending on the condition of your foam seals you might need longer bolts … I did
The most fiddly job was refitting the airbox until I reamered out the bolt holes in the filter to give some tollerance.
Otherwise all seems straight forward and with the new inlet air hose going to the duct the noise in the cabin is a little less.
Cheers Let me know how you get on.
Clive
Thanks Clive
Thanks for the advice about filings, probably wouldn’t have thought of that til i’d finished filling the sponge with them!! Was it easy to source longer bolts?
Will let you know how I get on.
Alex
I have a fastener supplier in next town.
You need 4 off X M8 20mm long preferrably stainless and a suply of washers…This size is always useful for undertray etc…I just get a selection so I’ve got a small stock.
Much cheaper than buying the “deals” you see on Ebay.
Good luck,
Hi Clive!
Sounds like a success!.. if not a bit tedious! So, is it easy to remove to clean?
AND… did that '.0000006 BHP incrase materialise??? How about the noise difference?
Hope it was it worth the effort???
I am still working on the catch tank… the more I think the more variations seem to be possible… and I cannot decide!
Cheers,
Pete

Ya big tart, you’re not buyting a friggin dress!

How do you bloody know I am not Shiela!
Now now you 2 girls!!! no more of this Decat-ed ness
Pete I would asses the job as not really essential and will be a PITA to clean in future.
Plus you cant see it so I cant lord it over my mates…
As for the power increase we will have to wait until next spring to see if my Kellog KornFlake can keep up with the rice burners…but of course now H have pulled out of F1 maybe there is a chance for us Cosworth worshipers now that would be a conversion
Hi Clive
Took everything apart today and then had to spend 40 mins taking the undertray off to retrieve a dropped allen key
anyway I wondered if whether it would be possible to do the reverse of what you’ve done by fitting the new backplate and then using the 5 Dzus fittings to attach the whole assembly thus making removing the assembly just 5 twists?
Any thoughts?
Alex
I know where you are comming from but try positioning the ITG backplate ( you will need to remove the trumpets for this ) and see where the dzus fastners are positioned .
INMHO they were going to be VERY dificult to access especially the lower ones.
Alternatively if you mean Fitting the Dzus’s to the pipercross ( but modifying thr filter lugs ) this would certainly be a possibility.
I did consider this BUT having tried similar fastners on my undertray I decided against it because it is devillish dificult to obtain the right tension with the dzus requiring numerous trial fits and adjustments of the spring retainers to get it right …In the end I decided a good old bolt was more to my taste
Ps if you want a set of quick release fastners for your undertray let me know…but I must warn you that most of the screwy bits disappeared down the road somewhere
Keep me posted
cheers
CLive, is there a part number just for the filter element? Might see if I can source through local ITG agent as I can’t be arsed paying squillions importing a bunch of air from the UK.
George…Does not seem to be a part no just for the filter BUT I believe Pipercross or someone like that offer a very similar looking filter assembly with separate filter and I was thinking this is the way to go when replacement needed.
I will keep you posted if I find it.
cheers
Clive,
Do you happen to know what the 1/2 inch feed pipe coming into the bottom of the Pipercross back plate comes from? Mine looks like a large diameter vacuum pipe that is connected to another lower down on the block. Did you leave this connected into the ITG filter?
Cheers, Pete.

That’s the air-draw for the IACV… takes it from here so it’s breathing filtered air.
