Both things that I could probably do with however it’s the car that was lucky this time
I’ve finally finished fitting the lightweight 2010 roof, engine cover and rear spoiler. Personally I
think the old style spoiler suited the car better but it wasn’t compatible with a lightweight single skin engine cover.
Mounting the panels wasn’t straight forward. For the engine lid I decided on two 3mm aluminium strips clamping it at the top and a bonnet pin at the bottom where the old lock was. For the roof I made some lightweight steel brackets for each corner with a captive nut, bonded on with Sikaflex (which is still stuck to my hands), and fastened a locking bolt through to the original mounting points. Just for good measure I added a webbing strap around the roll cage at the front centre with a hidden bolt in the scoop.
The first drive with the new roof was a bit drafty due to the lack of seals, can’t wait for a rainy day . I think I’ll keep the original roof in case I do any road trips in the car.
The roof only saves 4kg over the OEM but replacing the engine cover and brackets saved 7kg. Annoyingly the 2010 spoiler is 1.8kg heavier than standard. If only the carbon centre was real and not wrap
I’ve also fitted a race battery (-5kg) and removed the A/C components from the front end of the car. I realised I needed a new non A/C drive belt before removing the compressor. That nearly lightened my load even more at 55 for a Lotus belt luckily CN’s had a ‘similar’ one.
Still got a few more mods to do (if I ever get any time in the garage ). The car should be 30kg lighter when complete. It’s frustrating that it’s still a chasm away from an S1.
Also doing a few further handling improvements. The front steering arms are now modified for -2.5 deg camber. I’m also fitting another set of 2 way Ohlins with stiffer track spring rates and valving.
