I am taking my Exige in for a few bits ‘n’ bobs to be done, new tryes etc. I have asked for the brake pedal to be adjusted which they seemd OK with, but I also want the gearstick shaft replacing.
This is 'cos I heard (and felt) a distinct “crack” when changing gear a few months ago, and it has been a bit spongy ever since. They have said they will check it but may not replace it, is this good enough seeing as this has become a warranty issue in the states?
I will be spending around 600-900 on various things (and also go to them for all my normal servicing) so would have thought the above was just good customer service…?
The gear lever problem is not just limited to the USA, i believe it affects all 'yota cars built before Feb 2005.
A bulletin is on its way, once all the legal legislation has been ploughed through
This has been ‘addmitted’ on the LCI site, so your dealer should know. Perhaps they (dealers) only get paid on warranty issues once made official. So if yours aint broke (yet), it won’t be fixed.
My father in law is head of the vehicle re-call…he has told me that there will be a re-call for the gear lever on certain model year Exige, so if you think it could be a problem push for the change.
Thanks everyone, mine is an early 05 model, so probably made in late 04. I don’t understand why they are being funny about it, if they refused to change it, it snapped and I crashed, I’d sue their asses off!

Put it in an email to them, stating it must be done at the service, cc Lotus Customer Services in and point out the legal ramifications now they know it is an issue if anything happens to you.
Out of interest had a chat with the local dealer they know nothing of it but phoned Lotus. Lotus confirmed the recall and advised effected Exiges will get a letter to the owners.
Spoke to Chris Neils today, and the reason they won’t do it is because they have to send the part back, so if it ain’t broke, he implied they get a kicking from Lotus for replacing it…
