I shall amazon a set of o rings right now. This has happened twice in two years now so curious as to whats going on. Of course assuming it is the O ring and not something else ( sandwich plate / oil line to sandwich plate / breather to the top cover )
Try Simply Bearings for o-rings. As per another thread with Fonzey, they come in basically two types - metric or imperial. Measuring an o-ring’s never the easiest, it’s usually better to measure where the o-ring fits (eg. what it fits into and what goes through it…) then take the sizing from that.
Metric will be in logical 0.5mm increments generally for OD, ID & chord; imperial are BS sizes and come in sizes that are ‘illogical’, eg. 1.78mm chord, when converted to metric.

Happy to share… and revel in the total ‘anorakness’ of it
In anticipation of a O ring arriving and my RTV in case its not that I took the under trays off the car and got it in the air
However the sump I have on the car is freaking massive! I cannot see anything other than the oil filter ( one tiny drop of oil on the outside ) and the sandwich plate.
I cannot work out for the life of me where the oil is coming from , or where the dipstick actually enters the block. I have removed the top 11mm bolt but its seems pretty tight still.
Have to changed your O ring? How did you do it? I am still assuming its that. I have rules out it being the rocker cover that I changed over as there is nothing wet until 3/4 the way down the long block.
Suggestions or answers on a postcard are welcome.
You have a sandwich plate, what sensors are connected to this, perhaps the leak is there if you have found oil on the filter?
Check anything connected to the engine… Oil filter, sandwich plate and sensors, drain plug, dipstick, breather hoses, oil catch tanks etc.
Clean all of the above, run the engine to temperature, then get some kitchen roll after letting the the engine cool a little and place sheets around the above areas, plus anywhere else you can get to. Wedge the paper round sensors, the sandwich plate etc. Leave over night. Remove paper towels and see for oil.
I have checked the sensors and they are dry. It was a solitary drip on the bottom of the oil filter. It was soaked on the bottom of the sump mind. More towards center. I cannot for love or money find where the dip stick enters the block mind. The sump seems to have a massive wing on it and I am not the smallest of chaps across the chest so I struggle to get under the car even when jacked up!
Hi Andy, removing the dipstick tube is pretty easy just a little fiddly, in the picture you can just about see a 5mm nut. Once this is removed it simply pulls up, there will be some cables fixed along its length. There is a grove for the o ring to slot into. put it back in with a little oil to eaise slidding in. It will not need any RTV.
My advice is to wash the whole engine down with a degreaser and the take it for a good run without the undertrays on and then put back in the air. I will be surprised if it’s the dipstick o ring.
Picture of a recent SC SC conversion I did.
Ow if you need a close up of the dipstick tube I have a picture of it just not near it at the moment
@lotuslee - ah this one right here ?
I did undo the 11mm and pull but it didnt seem to shift any. I put it back in again incase I missed another.
Yep that’s it the dipstick type should pull out . Remove cables and wiggle it out
I gave it a bit of a tug but nowt.
Maybe a moot point if you dont think its that.
Argh , I hate leaks!
Gently twist it, it will come out only friction holding it in. The fact it is tight again suggests it’s not the tube.
Here is a picture of the end of the tube not the best picture but best I have on my phone
Ah , I see.
I have nipped it back up again. Its not quite a puddle of oil , but it certainly was enought for me to say thats not right.
I have cleaned up the sump and as much as I can around it. Ill have to warm it up as suggested and get it in the air to take a look.
Any common areas?
Check this breather to cam cover, running the engine might not be enough may need a run out on the road.
Also if you want to send me some more picture I can have a look.
Might be easier to whatsapp them my number is 07720398794
I hope you get this sorted. If its something really simple/stupid, I’m going to call you a dipstick
Ill get it sorted or throw £££ at it till it is sorted
Ill also not tell you if it was something really daft!
It’s so good to see such lively action on exiges.com although I sympathise with your frustration over the oily leak. Great how so many people can chip in with helpful comments.
100% agree thommo
Its really useful to have people offer advice and expertise. Lee even said Whatsapp me.
Truly awesome. Ill get his fixed one way or another, or go down in history as the lotus exige that resembled the exxon valdez.
