Exige S2 S 06 Cracked brake discs!

I’ve owned my 06 Exige S for a year now… (Well just under) The warranty is about to run out… And I heard a nasty noise from the back end… Turns out its was the air con freezing up (or so i’ve been told)… Whilst I was looking to see what the problem could have been, I noticed my rear brake discs have cracks all over them… Passing though the drill holes… Happy days I thought.

BTW… I picked up the car with 5500 on the clock, its now got 9400… It has also only had a couple of tanks of petrol since they serviced it a couple of months ago… I also asked them to give the car a good going over, as the LOTUS part of the warranty was running out… They quite happily charged me for new front brake pads, the back was fine! (Did they bloody look!?)

I took it back to the dealer (3rd car I’ve bought from them BTW… Elise, Griffith 500) First I was told, its just surface cracks!.. It will probly be ok… (Now ok, these are the sales guys, not the service blokes!) But also, they told me that lotus won’t warranty brakes… Now I understand that worn out brakes are a warranty issue… But these discs look in good condition, less than 1mm ware… No scoring… Just cracks…

Personally, I feel if they have cracked they are not fit for purpose. EG faulty. And should be replaced by my dealer FOC.

Of course, I took my car to another dealer, they just said DON’T DRIVE IT! Death, blood etc etc.

Has anyone else had problems with these drilled disks.

I must say, I am a bit peeved to say the least, my dealer (Clue… Dorset) they used to be perfect… Then they closed their old (and very local to me) dealer… Since then the service has gone down hill… And by service, I mean the service centre part of the business. So much that my mate takes his car on a 140 mile round trip to get his oil changed!

They even once managed to SPRAY the interior of my Elise when repairing a small crack just inside the door (under the door locking bolt)… No to mention damaging the steering wheel when they where removing the over spray from my drivers SEAT!

Anywho, back to the problem.

Brake disks, Exige… Low mileage… Cracked…

Have you had this problem? What would you do…?

And also, if I have to pay to get this sorted out What discs/pads would you fit.?

Cheers

God I thought it was only me…
My car was just out of warranty when I decided to put on the big brake kit from Lotus, while installing it at my friendly mechanics he noticed both my rear discs were cracked through the holes as well. Luckily for me the fronts were fine and as they were being removed we put them on the back. FWIW my car is an 06 S and had about 11k miles on it at the time.
I was quite annoyed by it but decided as it was out of warranty and cost me nothing to sort I would take it no further.

Cracking is pretty common on drilled disks - doesn’t matter what car. I keep a close eye on mine as I expect them to start cracking at some point.

Take it as an opportunity to upgrade - get some slotted ones next time - they arn’t expensive and in my opinion not worth an arguement with the dealer.

I was just amazed it was the rears not fronts…

This is what I thought… The question is, why do lotus fit these discs if they know they are going to crack!? ANd why only the rear discs?

The question is, what discs and pads should I fit? I’m hoping my dealer will do me a deal on replacement discs, but they are likly to be standard drilled discs… So I’m guessing they will only give me upto 10k miles.

Any suggestions?

I would try and get them to change them uder warranty, if they won’t get some alli belled fronts and swop them over like I did, then you get better at the front

What type flavor disc/pads would you suggest? And where from!?

Cheers…

I’ve got the AP ones on my S1.

AP’s all the way for the discs - Pagid 42’s or 14’s for pads depending on use
